1957: Blackhawks on the Small Screen

According to hockey history author Mike Commito, the Blackhawks at New York Rangers matchup on January 5, 1957 was the first NHL game to air on a United States television network.

The Rangers jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period. After a scoreless middle frame, Glen Skov got the Blackhawks on the board in the first minute of the third period. However, the Rangers scored twice in the game's final minute to secure a 4-1 win.

The Blackhawks outshot the Rangers 32-28, but New York goalie Gump Worsley was up to the task by stopping all but one attempt.

Notable Blackhawks Birthdays

Kyle Calder, a fifth-round draft pick of the Blackhawks in 1997, was born on January 5, 1979. The Alberta native scored 210 points (85 goals, 125 assists) in 359 games across six seasons with the Blackhawks. Chicago traded Calder to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Michal Handzus on Aug. 4, 2006.

Filip Roos, an undrafted defenseman who signed an entry-level contract with Chicago, was born on January 5, 1999. The 6-foot-4 blueliner has spent most of his time stateside with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. As of this writing, Roos has three points (one goal, two assists) in 21 NHL games across parts of two seasons with the Blackhawks.
