Season review

Koehn Ziemmer’s role from his junior days (Prince George Cougars-WHL) was vastly different from his role with the Reign. The former third-round pick in 2023 was a healthy scratch for the first five games before drawing into the lineup, and would rotate in and out of the lineup throughout the season. In Prince George, he was the man. He was playing on the top line, top power play unit, more minutes, and used in every offensive situation.

It wasn’t like that in Ontario. It was starting from scratch at the professional level for him. Instead of top-line minutes and first power-play unit time, he saw fourth-line minutes and occasional time on the second power-play unit. Despite all of that, Head Coach Andrew Lord cited Ziemmer’s work ethic and willingness to improve, and went as far as to say Ziemmer was quietly becoming a great story for the Reign.

The area in Ziemmer’s game where he gets most recognition is his shot deception. He has a hard, accurate shot with a wicked release. What is surprising for those who didn’t see any of Ziemmer’s tape or WHL games is that he has the physicality in his arsenal. The rookie tallied three fighting majors and wasn’t afraid to throw a hit on the forecheck.
