The Ontario Reign went 1-1-0-0 in their two games during the week to conclude their four-game homestand to open 2025-26.

The Reign dropped their first game in a sluggish 2-0 defeat against the Henderson Silver Knights. There weren’t many offensive chances either team could muster, but Henderson was victorious after 60 minutes.

Ontario ended the week with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the third period over the Colorado Eagles, despite recording only 15 shots on goal.

With the recap of the games over, let’s get to our three stars for the week!

Third star

Kenny Connors

Stats: Two games played, zero goals, one assist, one point, +/- 0 rating, one shot on goal

Kenny Connors recorded an assist in Ontario’s two games, but that wasn’t the reason why he was named the third star of the week for me. Connors has done well and earned high praise from head coach Andrew Lord. In Sunday’s game, Connors was rewarded with power play time late in the third period, and when asked what the reasoning was behind that decision, Lord said he deserved it.

“[Connors] deserves it. Great NHL rookie camp, main camp, and American League camp. He’s Mr. Consistent for a first-year player. He does things the right way, reads the game at a very high level, and has a great skill set,” said Lord after the team’s 3-2 victory over the Eagles.

Los Angeles’ fourth-round pick from 2022 is still searching for his first professional goal, but playing a strong 200-foot game has already caught the attention of the coaching staff.

Second star

Samuel Bolduc

Stats: Two games played, two goals, zero assists, two points, +1 rating, four shots on goal

The Reign scored only three goals combined in their two games. Two of them came off the stick of Samuel Bolduc. With the Reign down 2-1 entering the third period, somebody needed to spark the comeback. That somebody was Bolduc.

Bolduc’s first tally was a blast from the blue line less than a minute into the final period. That was his game-tying goal. His game-winning goal came on the power play on a sweet give-and-go on a zone entry with Aatu Jamsen.

He was the hero and given the Reign Train conductor hat after the game.

First star

Erik Portillo

Stats: Two games played, 0-1-0-0 record, 46 saves on 50 shots, .920 save percentage

Erik Portillo is the first star of the week for me after being an honorable mention last week. Portillo started both games for the Reign and stopped 23 shots in each game for a .920 save percentage combined.

He didn’t earn the win because he came out of the game to start the third period as Isaiah Saville took over between the pipes during Ontario’s comeback. Since the Reign scored the game-winning goal with Saville in net, he was credited with the win.

Portillo has allowed two goals or fewer in his last three starts since allowing five in the season opener to the Tucson Roadrunners. A good step for him in the right direction as he returns from his long-term back injury.
