Both the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers will be looking at offseason changes. For the Senators, they’ll be continuing their rebuild and seeking out players who can add to and accentuate their core, working towards the day they are a consistently competitive team. For the Flyers, it’s about getting back to being a winning organization and moving pieces that may fetch a better return than holding on to a particular player.

As such, Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch, writes that he’s heard from Senators followers that the team might be interested in Flyers’ forward Claude Giroux. It’s not clear where these talks are originating from and if this is anything more than the media tossing out some ideas, but Giroux becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer so there is potential that he’s a valuable piece the Flyers may look to trade if Giroux is even remotely hinting at moving on when he’s permitted to do so.

Garrioch writes that he’s not sure the Flyers would entertain an offer from the Senators. He notes of Giroux’s contract situation and relationship with the team: “He has a full no move clause and has no desire to leave the City of Brotherly Love. He wants to help Philadelphia get to the next level and though you never-say-never this one has little or no chance.”

Would the Flyers Really Let Giroux Go?

Giroux is an icon in Philadelphia and one of team’s most productive players. He scored 43 points in 54 games this season and recently tied Brian Propp for the 3rd all-time in points, passing him this season and finishing with 858 points over his regular season career. There’s still a lot of hockey left in this player and while the Flyers might be keen the make changes, Giroux may not be the player you sacrifice.

That said, at 33 years old and with an $8.275 million price tag attached to his name for another season, maybe the Flyers figure they can do a lot with the return they get in any deal. There is something to be said for trading a player when their value is still high.

Giroux does have a full no-move clause in his contract, so all of this could be a moot point if he’s not keen on joining the Senators and wants to play for a Stanley Cup contender.
