Start the celebrations, Edmonton. It looks like Connor McDavid is here to stay.
On Monday, insider Elliotte Friedman reported that McDavid is set to sign an extension with the Edmonton Oilers. Details have yet to be released. At the same time, McDavid shared a picture on Instagram with him and teammates on the ice, with the caption: “Our journey here continues ”
This comes just moments after TSN Edmonton’s Ryan Rishaug first reported that “things are moving” on a McDavid extension and that there’s a “very good chance” we see that extension done today, with Friedman echoing the report, saying we’re “trending towards a Connor McDavid extension today.”
With the Edmonton Oilers’ season set to kick off in two days, it’s great news for fans anxious to see their captain remain in town for years to come. McDavid’s extension has been the hottest topic in the city since he became eligible to re-sign on July 1st. Since then, it’s been an active summer of rumours on what was next for McDavid, ranging from a long-term deal in Edmonton to waiting to see how things play out in free agency next summer. Over the last few weeks, the trending narrative has been that McDavid will likely sign somewhere around a four-year deal, with a team-friendly figure, to build a winning roster around him. We’ll wait to see how close those reports are as more details emerge on his contract.
Once the final details are done on McDavid’s extension, all attention can turn to the regular season as we put this huge distraction to bed. The Oilers face off against the Calgary Flames for their home opener this Wednesday at 8 PM MT. With a new contract in ink and very likely a nice pay raise on the way for him, McDavid will look to use that to fuel him for a big season this year. After back-to-back Stanley Cup Final losses, the Canadian captain is hungry to overcome that final hurdle and looks poised to bring his all to do it this year. Add to that the return of NHLers to the Winter Olympics, and we can expect a banner McDavid season.
