Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin has confirmed he will take time to reflect and consult with his family before making a final decision on his playing future this summer. While many are under the assumption the 2025-26 NHL season would be his last, he’s not yet made up his mind.
Alex Ovechkin sat down with John Walton to discuss his plans to take time after the season to reflect and consult with his family before determining his future this summer.

In an exclusive interview with Capitals broadcaster John Walton, the 40-year-old captain opened up about how and when he’ll decide to hang up his skates. Ovechkin, who is in the final year of his current contract, stated he has no immediate plans to retire but wants to fully evaluate his options with his loved ones.
“I’m going to take some time after the season to reflect and talk with my family,” Ovechkin told Walton. “Then this summer I will make a decision about my future.”
The NHL’s all-time goals leader has used this season to chase Wayne Gretzky’s career goal record. Ovechkin has played in all 81 games this season, and the record would be within reach next season. Still, the physical toll of 20 NHL seasons has become an increasingly important factor in his thinking.
Ovechkin currently sits just shy of breaking Gretzky’s record of 1016 (regular season and playoffs). There’s also the more lofty goal of reaching 1000 regular-season goals, which, if Ovechkin were to stick around for a couple more seasons, he could reach.
The career goals record is not one he’ll get close to this season, as the Capitals’ playoff hopes are all but gone. They are five points back of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The question will be, how long can he keep going? Ovechkin has made it clear that his decision will be based on his physical condition, and he’s been remarkably durable throughout his career. Capitals management has repeatedly stated they will support whatever decision Ovechkin makes.
If he does choose to retire, it would mark the end of one of the most dominant and consistent careers in NHL history.
