The Florida Panthers lost winger Brad Marchand near the end of the second period of Tuesday’s win over the Los Angeles Kings. Marchand sustained a lower-body injury after a collision with Los Angeles’ Brandt Clarke pushed him into the Kings’ net. His left leg appeared to bend awkwardly against the post. Marchand needed help off the ice and struggled to put weight on his left leg.
Marchand was playing in just his second game back from an injury that required surgery in August. His 2025-26 season also ended in March due to what is believed to be a hip and sports hernia injury, though it’s not clear if that injury is what his summer surgery addressed. Either way, Marchand will end up back on the mend after missing 21 of Florida’s last 23 games.
The 38 year old is meant to be playing through his golden years on one of the league’s top teams. Instead, he seems to be caught in a string of injury misfortune that has affected much of the Panthers’ lineup. Star center Aleksander Barkov has also landed back on long-term injured reserve – out six-to-eight weeks with a lower-body injury after missing the entirety of the 2025-26 season with a knee injury sustained in training camp. Gustav Forsling and Aaron Ekblad have also missed game action this season – the latter due to the birth of his first child.
Marchand has provided a major boost to Florida’s lineup when healthy. He has one goal in two appearances this season and scored 27 goals and 54 points in 52 games last season. Marchand’s scoring has come no matter what line he plays on, allowing Florida some helpful flexibility while they navigate other injuries.
The two-time Stanley Cup-winner will be tough to replace. His absence could bump Matthew Tkachuk up to the top line across from his brother Brady Tkachuk. That shift would also move rookie Sandis Vilmanis into the top-six, while Sam Lafferty likely moves onto the fourth line. Those changes would put added pressure on Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, and Carter Verhaeghe to hold up the top-end of Florida’s offense – though the Panthers’ wealth of depth may be able to fill the hole. While Marchand’s injury details, or timeline, aren’t yet clear – it seems it could be some time until the Panthers’ lineup is back to full-strength.
