Panthers' Brad Marchand Takes Leave of Absence After Tragic News

Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand has taken a leave of absence from the team to return home to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he is stepping behind the bench to help a close friend through tragedy.

Marchand flew to Canada earlier this week to coach the March & Mill Co. Hunters, a junior team in the Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League, following the death of head coach J.P. MacCallum’s 10-year-old daughter, Selah, who passed away after a year-long battle with cancer.

MacCallum has been Marchand’s offseason trainer for a large part of his career during the offseasons, dating back to his days in junior hockey. Marchand's outdoor apparel company, March & Mill Co., sponsors the Hunters.

On Wednesday night, Brad Marchand will coach the U18 March and Mill Co. Hunters, supporting in for his longtime friend, JP MacCallum.

On Wednesday, Marchand joined former NHL defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk behind the bench to allow MacCallum to remain with his family.

“This gesture reflects the true spirit of the hockey community in Nova Scotia, one built on compassion, loyalty, and connection that extends far beyond the rink,” said Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League president Paul Graham in a statement. “Our thoughts are with J.P., his loved ones, and the entire Hunters organization.”

Marchand also donated a signed jersey for an online raffle to raise funds for the MacCallum family.

Local reports noted donation boxes were placed throughout the Halifax Forum, where the Hunters hosted the Halifax McDonald’s on Wednesday night in a tribute to Selah.

The Panthers confirmed Marchand’s absence from practice and Tuesday’s 3–2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, allowing him time to attend the event.

Marchand has 11 points in 10 games this season, including five goals. He leads all Panthers players in total points and assists, and he's tied for the most goals with fellow forward Sam Reinhart.

Florida next plays Saturday at home against the Dallas Stars, when Marchand is expected to rejoin the team if all goes according to plan.
