Patrick Kane's re-connection with friend should energize Rangers

It’s always easier to move to a new place if you already have a friend there.

For forward Patrick Kane, whom the New York Rangers are acquiring from Chicago , that friend is Artemi Panarin.

Kane and Panarin, a Rangers forward, first played together with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2015-16 season. Panarin was a 24-year-old undrafted rookie from Russia. Chicago soon paired him with Kane, a former first overall pick who already had played eight NHL seasons.

In their first season together, Kane put up 46 goals and 60 assists and Panarin tallied 30 goals and 47 assists. Kane earned the Hart Trophy for NHL MVP and the Art Ross Trophy for the most points in the league.

Panarin, meanwhile, won the Calder Trophy as the league’s best rookie. The Kane-Panarin chemistry was undeniable.

Kane and Panarin only played together for two full seasons in Chicago. In that time, the Russian assisted on 35 of Kane’s 80 goals (43.75%). Kane assisted on 46 of Panarin’s 60 markers (76.67%).

Now in the twilight of his career, Kane didn't play with stellar talent in Chicago in recent seasons. This trade and reunion with Panarin should give him and the Rangers a boost.

Newly acquired Vladimir Tarasenko, Panarin’s other buddy, plays on the top line with Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, so there is room for Kane on Panarin’s line with center Vincent Trocheck.

Kane's overall numbers are down this season, but he elevated his play in the past four games, scoring seven of his 16 goals.

While rumors of his potential trade to New York swirled, Kane publicly expressed disappointment when the Rangers dealt for Tarasenko. But Kane still got his wish fulfilled.

Kane and Panarin last played together nearly six years ago, so their expected debut together Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers should energize both.

The Rangers and their fans are hoping they’ll be watching this duo deep into June.
