Overcoming Injuries and Adversity

Last season, Patrik Laine’s performance for the Montreal Canadiens was under scrutiny. Despite his natural goal-scoring ability, injuries and conditioning issues hampered his impact. Laine arrived at training camp not fully rehabilitated and clearly behind in game shape. A preseason injury further delayed his start, and when he returned on December 2, he still lacked peak fitness. Even with two doctors recommending season-ending surgery, Laine chose to play through pain, wearing a knee brace and undergoing constant physiotherapy.

Searching for the Right Linemates

Another challenge Laine faced was the lack of a stable, high-caliber centerman. Throughout the season, he played alongside multiple centers including Kirby Dach before his injury, Alex Newhook, and Jake Evans. This revolving door of linemates limited Laine’s offensive potential and chemistry development.

Impressive Scoring Despite Challenges

Even under these tough circumstances, Laine managed 22 goals in just 52 games. That’s a pace equivalent to 32 goals over a full 82-game season, which would have made him the Canadiens’ second leading scorer behind only Cole Caufield’s 37 goals.

What to Expect This Season

Looking ahead, Tony Marinaro emphasized the potential impact of a fully healthy Laine this season. With a healed knee, improved conditioning, and more stable support from linemates like top playmaker Demi Dov and a rejuvenated Kirby Dach, Laine could realistically approach or surpass the 40-goal mark.

Why Forty Goals Matters for Montreal

A 40-goal Laine could be the difference between the Canadiens reaching the playoffs or falling short. With Caufield already an elite scorer and the possibility of a strong playmaking core returning to full strength, the Canadiens’ offensive ceiling is higher than in previous seasons.

Bottom Line

Patrik Laine’s commitment to playing through adversity last season showed his determination, but this year could be about dominance. If he’s healthy and well supported, Laine has the tools to emerge as a game changer for Montreal’s playoff hopes.
