Throughout the Florida Panthers’ history, the organization has had countless distinguished coaches, from those who found success with the team to those who became iconic elsewhere, and even those in the Hall of Fame. However, one coach whose success with the team and throughout his career stands out above the rest is current Panthers head coach Paul Maurice. He led them to the franchise’s best run of team success. That said, plenty of other Panthers head coaches have enjoyed success with the team and in the rest of their careers, but do any of them compare to Maurice?

Paul Maurice With the Florida Panthers

As Panthers head coach through parts of five seasons and counting, Paul Maurice has overseen 339 regular-season games. In that span, he has 186 wins, 129 losses, and 24 overtime losses. That puts him at 396 points and a .584 points percentage. He has three seasons with 40-plus wins and one regular season with 50-plus wins. That’s among the most successful regular seasons in Panthers hockey.

Meanwhile, regular-season success isn’t the only notable aspect of his tenure so far; he’s also helped lead the team to playoff success. In his fruitful tenure with the Panthers, he has coached 68 playoff games to a 45-23 record and .662 winning percentage.

The team was led to supreme success with him behind the bench with two Stanley Cup victories and an additional appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. He also had productive stints with the Whalers, Hurricanes, Leafs, and Jets, reinforcing his success as an NHL head coach. Still, his best tenure came with the Florida Panthers and perhaps the best of anyone in franchise history.

His success and coaching style helped cement the Panthers’ winning run, and as coach, he was instrumental in shaping the identity and style the championship teams played. It was the best example in franchise history of a team adopting the identity the coach shaped, while also having an exceptionally talented roster.

Doug MacLean With the Florida Panthers

Doug MacLean spent parts of three seasons as head coach of the Florida Panthers, with his first season at the helm as the highlight. Over that time, he coached 187 regular-season games and finished with an 83-71-33 record. He totaled 199 points during his tenure as Panthers head coach and in the franchise’s early years.

His high point came in his first season in charge, when he coached the Panthers to an Eastern Conference Championship and a Stanley Cup Final appearance, ultimately falling short to the Colorado Avalanche. He also played a part in a two-year run behind the bench of the Columbus Blue Jackets, but he’ll be most remembered for his Stanley Cup Final appearance with the Panthers.

Joel Quenneville With the Florida Panthers

Another coach in Panthers history with a lot of success, but he earned it at other stops. With Florida, though, he coached parts of three seasons. In that stretch, Joel Quenneville coached 132 regular-season games and finished with 79 wins, 49 losses, and 13 overtime losses. Over those seasons, the team earned 171 points. He also stood behind the bench for 10 playoff games with the Panthers, finishing 3-7. He had a winning tenure with the team, even though it was shorter and didn’t reach the playoff success of some other Panthers coaches. He collected most of his wins at other NHL stops, but he did succeed with the Panthers.

Roger Neilson With the Florida Panthers

Roger Neilson was the only coach to date to make the Hall of Fame and coach the Panthers. While his most notable success came outside of his time in South Florida, he did coach the inaugural seasons of the Panthers. He coached the Panthers for two seasons and guided them through 132 games. He posted a 53-56 record, plus 23 ties. He steered the team to 129 points as head coach. As Panthers head coach, he led them to zero playoff appearances. His greatest successes came outside South Florida, but he helped lay the foundation in the organization’s formative years and cemented his Hall of Fame career.

Jacques Martin With the Florida Panthers

Another outstanding coach who lasted a long time at various NHL stops, Jacques Martin coached the Panthers for three seasons. In that run, he coached 246 games and posted 110 wins, 100 losses, and 36 overtime losses. He helped lead the team to 256 points in regular-season play. He never led the Panthers to the playoffs. He had a successful run at several other stops, including St. Louis, Ottawa, Montreal, and Ottawa again, from the 1980s to the 2020s, with some gaps in between. Even so, he ran an NHL bench spanning four decades.

Across the franchise’s relatively brief history, the Panthers have had some team success and some highly accomplished coaches. Yet one name rises above the field when you combine those two categories: current head coach Paul Maurice, who led the franchise to its greatest run and still has the opportunity to add to that resume.
