Penguins, Flyers ‘reverse retro’ jerseys leaked?

The NHL is rumored to be implementing "reverse retro" alternate jerseys next season, which have been classified as "throwbacks with a twist," according to Icethetics . That rumor picked up a little more steam on Monday, too, as new sweater designs for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers reportedly were leaked.

Readers of Icethetics directed Chris Smith to an eBay listing that appeared to show new jerseys for the Pennsylvania teams. The photos show Fanatics-branded Breakaway jerseys, which are lower-priced replicas. The designs are accurate to the Adizero game jerseys made by Adidas, Smith says.

The jerseys are reportedly NHL-licensed products and there are no signs of obvious counterfeit. Smith adds that Fanatics jerseys are made in Indonesia, which is the listed location for the eBay seller.

The sweaters that the Penguins are rumored to be bringing back are a spin on their '90s jerseys, which displayed the city of Pittsburgh's name diagonally across the front. They wore those from 1992-97.

The Flyers have instead decided to take an '80s route, adding some black striping to their mostly unchanged jerseys from that decade.

If the NHL is taking a "reverse retro" approach to new jerseys, it would explain why Nathan MacKinnon shared a photo of powder blue gloves to his Instagram story last week, indicating that the Colorado Avalanche may be bringing back Quebec Nordiques-inspired sweaters.

While nothing has been confirmed, this certainly seems like something NHL fans will be on board with for the coming seasons. After all, who doesn't like a good throwback jersey?
