As noted by ESPN stats, forward Jake Guentzel leads all Pittsburgh Penguins players with 15 goals and 27 points, and he currently holds the NHL's longest active point streak at 13 games.
That information makes Wednesday's update all the more painful for Pittsburgh fans.
Per Michelle Crechiolo of the team's website, head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters that Guentzel is considered week-to-week with an undisclosed upper-body injury.
According to Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Guentzel was visibly shaken up when he took a shot off his right hand in the first period of Monday’s 6-1 win at the Seattle Kraken. The 27-year-old missed some of the contest but ultimately returned to the ice and scored a pair of goals in the blowout victory.
Guentzel did not practice Wednesday, and it seems he'll miss at least Friday's game at the Washington Capitals. Pittsburgh hosts the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.
"Those are pretty big shoes to fill, obviously," forward Kasperi Kapanen said of Guentzel. "Jake's been one of our best players, if not our best player, for a long period now."
Kapanen is on track to play alongside superstar captain Sidney Crosby and Evan Rodrigues during Guentzel's absence. Guentzel, meanwhile, recorded an incredible five goals and two assists over the past two games, both of which Pittsburgh won to improve to 12-8-5.
