The Pittsburgh Penguins are approaching the final year of Evgeni Malkin's deal, and recent comments from Kyle Dubas suggest they may trade the star veteran.

This off-season has been off to a solid start for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the team making several trades and some great pickups at the 2025 NHL Draft, but with free agency approaching, things are about to get chaotic.

General Manager Kyle Dubas has already confirmed that the team are open to moving the veteran trio of Rickard Rakell, Bryan Rust and Erik Karlsson, but now, the door has been opened to another shocking trade.

In his latest comments on veteran Evgeni Malkin, Dubas noted that the team are heading into the year with Malkin on the roster, but will meet at the Olympic break to see where he's at, seemingly leaving the door open for a surprise trade.

While Dubas understands how much Malkin means to the organization and the city of Pittsburgh, commending him on the high level he plays at despite being 39-years old, he also states that he wants to do right by the player, and if that means he wants to be traded to a winner, don't be shocked to see it happen.

Despite having a rotating cast of wingers alongside him in 2024/25, Malkin managed to post 16 goals and 50 points in 68 games played, and if he wants to be traded, he could provide immense value to a contender somewhere in the NHL.

Ultimately, it's likely that Malkin is going to play out this season with the Penguins, with his NHL future beyond 2025/26 in doubt, but if there is any indication he wants to be moved, Dubas has made it clear that he wants to do right by both the player and the organization, meaning we've got a very interesting year ahead of us in Pittsburgh.
