Penguins Have Put Themselves in a Good Position to Have a Bright Future

The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently in unfamiliar territory. They will more than likely miss the playoffs for the third year in a row, and with the core inching closer to retirement, the rebuild is almost in full swing. President of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas has done a good job of stockpiling draft picks and setting the team up for a successful future. He has put the team in a good position to have a productive offseason.

Penguins Have Options This Summer

Pittsburgh’s current outlook is pretty bleak. They are six points out of a wild card spot, and their chances of making the postseason are pretty slim. However, their future is starting to look brighter and brighter. They have 29 draft picks over the next three drafts and a good amount of prospects coming up the ranks. Combine that with the NHL salary cap going up this summer, and suddenly the Penguins’ predicament does not look so bad.

The Penguins have a few different options this summer, including one that they have rarely utilized. They will have the cap space available to send out an offer sheet, and Dubas may very well take this route. An offer sheet is a contract offered by one team to a restricted free agent on a different team. If the player chooses to sign the offer sheet and their original team does not match it, they become a member of the new team.

There are also several qualifications to be eligible for an offer sheet. One of them is that the player must be younger than 27 on July 1 of that year. Dubas has been very vocal about adding young players to his roster. He has the means to send out offer sheets this summer and add some young talent to the team.

One young player that Dubas should definitely have his eye on is Mason McTavish. He was drafted third overall in 2021 by the Anaheim Ducks. He just turned 22 in January, and he’s quickly becoming a legitimate NHL center. He has played in 49 games this season and has 13 goals and 27 points. He’s mostly been playing on the third line this season with the Ducks, but at 6-foot-1, 219 pounds, he has the makings of a solid second-line center.

Pittsburgh will be in need of a second-line center sooner rather than later as Evgeni Malkin inches closer to retirement. McTavish is a very physical player who is good at creating space. He also has a good net-front presence and seems to thrive under pressure. If he is interested in moving on from Anaheim, Dubas should seriously consider his options. He would more than likely have to give up a top prospect and probably more, which he should have no problem doing.

McTavish is a young player who could instantly improve Pittsburgh’s lineup. That coupled with all the young prospects who will be coming up from Wilkes-Barre next season makes for a very promising outlook.

Penguins Are Set Up For Future Success

There is no doubt that the Penguins have had a disappointing season. However, they have more than a few reasons to be optimistic. They will have the cap space to be aggressive in free agency this summer, or they could also choose to simply work on developing all of their current prospects. They could also send out an offer sheet and land a young star. The rebuild/retool is definitely starting in Pittsburgh this summer, and the team is set up to get back on track in the next couple of years.
