Over the weekend, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey noted that the situation involving superstar Sidney Crosby is now "far more worrisome" for Pittsburgh Penguins fans than it was even a couple of weeks ago as Crosby remains on track to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 of next year.
For a mailbag published on Monday, Penguins insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic insisted that Crosby "is very, very, very much above chasing championships" amid whispers suggesting the captain may not be thrilled with the direction of the franchise.
"This is a man of integrity and loyalty," Yohe wrote. "Crosby is 37. He was drafted by the Penguins when he was still 17. In other words, he’s been with the Penguins more than half of his life and literally all of his adult life. He’s been the Penguins captain for almost half of his life."
Crosby became the subject of trade rumors this past winter before the Penguins missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season and team president/general manager Kyle Dubas unofficially began a badly-needed roster rebuild. As of Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to have Pittsburgh at +120 betting odds to qualify for the 2024-25 playoffs.
Yohe and other Penguins reporters have repeatedly said since the spring that Crosby wants to eventually retire as a one-club NHL man and that Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Penguins, is willing to pay the three-time Stanley Cup champion so he can accomplish that goal. However, there was still no indication as of Monday afternoon that Crosby was close to putting pen to paper on any type of extension with the Penguins.
With all that said, Yohe hinted that Crosby has reasons to want to stay in Pittsburgh that go beyond what happens on the ice.
"We’re already dealing with a very loyal human being, someone who doesn’t care for change, almost to the point of madness," Yohe continued. "Then consider that playing for a Canadian team would be unbearable for Crosby, who already has a tough time even going to dinner in his native country."
Yohe predicted that Dubas could get a 2025 first-round draft pick, a 2026 first-round choice, a "top prospect" and "a young NHL player" for Crosby if the future Hall of Famer agreed to a trade between now and the middle of September. Yohe added that "no one is talking about" the possibility that Crosby wants to play out the final year of his deal and then retire next summer.
Only the people directly involved know, for sure, why Crosby hasn't yet signed an extension many expected would be announced over a month ago. It now seems what was a "nothing-to-see-here" matter as of late July could soon become one of the more interesting NHL offseason stories in recent memory.

As the Pittsburgh Penguins look around the NHL for trade options regarding a few veteran players, it seems that a deal could come sooner rather than later. One player that has drawn all sorts of interest is veteran Rickard Rakell. With Pittsburgh wanting to get younger, Rakell has been put on the trade block. The Penguins have been talking with a few teams, and Rakell could net this team some strong future assets. NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report listed a few landing spots for the Penguins star, with the Carolina Hurricanes being one of them. Carolina has put together a strong offseason so far, but adding Rakell to the mix could be the cherry on top. "The Carolina Hurricanes have already had a bold offseason by signing forward Nikolaj Ehlers in free agency and trading for defenseman K'Andre Miller. Both moves are significant and add to an already strong team. "But why stop there? Especially when they are still swimming in salary-cap space due to how many team-friendly contracts they have on their roster," Gretz wrote. With the Hurricanes looking to finally get over the hump in the Eastern Conference, this could be one way to help. Rakell remains a strong scoring option on the ice, and he could make this team even more formidable. Last season with Pittsburgh, Rakell put up 35 goals and 35 assists. The veteran proved that he could still be a valuable piece to a winning puzzle, and the Hurricanes could use his skill set. Adding a player like Rakell this late in the offseason could be a steal for the Hurricanes, and this could bolster the depth across the roster. Carolina is all-in on going after a Stanley Cup title next season, and Rakell could be the missing piece.
Oregon wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has struggled to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the Ducks, and he is now in a terrible position heading into 2025 as well. Dickey has been suspended indefinitely by Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning announced on Tuesday. Lanning also suggested that Dickey may not play for the Ducks again. "We have two team rules; that’s respectful, be on time,” Lanning said, via James Crepea of The Oregonian. “There’s some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what’s in front of us right now. "Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here that might be somewhere else.” Dickey was a five-star recruit and rated as one of the top wide receivers in the country when he came out of Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, Calif., in 2023. He suffered an injury in his senior year in high school and redshirted as a freshman at Oregon. Dickey has two catches for 14 years during his time with the Ducks. Oregon went 13-1 in Lanning's third season with the program last season. The Ducks lost to eventual national champion Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
The quarterback battle for Notre Dame is set to come to an end shortly, and it might be a surprise considering how the national media predicted the race to finish. Per Eric Hansen of On3, head coach Marcus Freeman is set to name the starting quarterback by Sunday when he meets the media. The Irish are still letting the quarterback battle play out until then, but it appears sophomore quarterback Kenny Minchey is the favorite to start at Hard Rock Stadium against the Miami Hurricanes on Aug. 31. Minchey has shown improvement in numerous areas throughout camp, and he has the edge on freshman quarterback CJ Carr in what is believed to be the final week of the competition. "As of Wednesday, the line between 1 and 2 remained blurred," Hansen wrote. "The tiebreaker may eventually go to Minchey, per the source, because of his ability to be a true running threat and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s preference to have that element to put pressure on opposing defenses. "But he also has a preference for QBs who can transcend adversity, and the training camp phase was choreographed to test precisely that. While both contenders responded persistently in a manner that defies their inexperience, Minchey has been exceptional in that regard." Throughout the summer, ESPN writers such as Bill Connelly and Mark Schlabach have written as though it were a forgone conclusion that Carr would win the battle in training camp. However, Minchey appears to be a natural fit for how offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes to scheme against a defense. He helped dual-threat Jayden Daniels earn a Heisman Trophy in 2023 and took Notre Dame to a national championship appearance with Riley Leonard. The battle isn't over, but the edge appears to be running Minchey's way.
