After back-to-back regulation losses, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff hopes are on the brink. Sitting 10 points back of a wild card spot, the Penguins’ backs are against the wall as they round out this Western Conference road trip. Their next challenger will be one of the best offensive teams in the league. Here’s what to watch for as the Penguins take on the Edmonton Oilers.
It feels inevitable that the Penguins will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season. With a record of 27-23-8, they’d have to win at least 16 of their remaining 24 games to have the slightest chance. Unfortunately, this team’s play all season has garnered little faith that they are capable of such a feat. A win against the high-powered Oilers could go a long way in getting this team back on the unlikely track to the playoffs.
The Oilers boast one of the most prolific offenses led by two generational players, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisitl. This season is more of the same, but they’re also getting a huge scoring season from forward Zach Hyman.
Hyman has 40 goals in 57 games, surpassing his career high of 36 posted last season. He’s formed incredible chemistry playing alongside McDavid, and the Penguins will need to be on the lookout for Hyman near the crease.
The Penguins might have lost their last two games, but there has been one positive to take from each: improved play from the bottom six forwards. The loss against Calgary, especially, was a bottom-six affair. Jeff Carter, Lars Eller, and Jonathan Gruden all registered goals for the Pens in a solid effort from their third and fourth lines. Desperate for a win in Edmonton, the bottom six needs to show up again and produce even more.
The Penguins and Oilers face off at 9:00 p.m. at Rogers Place.
