Penguins Should Trade Rickard Rakell Next
Rickard Rakell, Pittsburgh Penguins (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

The Pittsburgh Penguins have not been having a great season. The team is currently in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division and six points out of a wild-card spot. At this point, it would take a miracle for the Penguins to make the postseason. Even though the team as a whole is not performing well, there are more than a few players who have been having a standout season. Rickard Rakell is one of the players who has been a nice surprise for them, but are his days in Pittsburgh numbered?

Rakell Has Been Holding His Own

Last season, Rakell had 15 goals in 70 games. Coming into this season, he had a lot to prove, but he has more than delivered. Currently, he has 32 points in his last 29 games, and he leads his team in goals with 25. He has been a staple on the first line next to Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust. He was just added to Team Sweden for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off as an injury replacement for Vegas Golden Knights forward William Karlsson. The 10-day tournament starts on Feb. 12 in Montreal.

Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson was among the first named to Team Sweden, however, Rakell did not make the initial cut. Perhaps not being included on the initial roster back at the beginning of December lit a fire under the 31-year-old winger. In the 32 games since the roster came out, he has 15 goals. Pittsburgh is definitely thankful for whatever has jump-started Rakell’s game, but will they be keeping him as part of their roster?

The Penguins have already started making moves toward a major retool. On Feb. 1, they traded defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a future first-round draft pick, Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharnais and 18-year-old prospect Melvin Fernstrom.

This trade was good asset management and furthered general manager (GM) Kyle Dubas’ plan for the next few years. Heinen was previously with Pittsburgh from 2021 through the 2022-23 season. During the 2021-22 season, he scored 18 goals, and the team is hoping to get some type of production out of him through the remainder of the season.

There may not be a fire sale in Pittsburgh approaching the trade deadline, however, Dubas is definitely a seller as the deadline approaches. With the kind of season Rakell is having, he is a huge bargaining chip for the Penguins. Dubas has been clear about his goal to make the team younger and at 31 years old the Swedish forward is no longer in that category.

Rakell’s current contract runs through the 2027-28 season and carries an average annual value of $5 million. That is a huge discount for a player who can score the way he does. It is probably safe to say Dubas is currently listening to offers for his best trading chip, and if he gets the right one he won’t hesitate to make a deal.

Dubas Planning for the Future

As much as the Penguins organization wanted to see Crosby and the rest of the core lift one more Stanley Cup before retirement, the reality is the team is closer to the draft lottery than a championship. Dubas knows he has a limited window with Rakell and if there is a trade to be made, he is going to make one. He has to prioritize Pittsburgh’s long-term future, and he may wait until March 7 in order to raise the asking price for his star winger. At this point, it is clear that he has a plan for the future and it seems to be a good one.

Chicago Blackhawks reportedly set to trade 25-year-old goaltender to Stars rival, Edmonton Oilers

The Chicago Blackhawks, a crowded goaltending situation and trade rumors involving the Edmonton Oilers have fans wondering if the Stars' rivals could soon upgrade their crease before training camp. With training camp approaching, Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson has five goalies under contract, including Spencer Knight, Arvid Soderblom, Drew Commesso, newly signed Stanislav Berezhnoy, and veteran Laurent Brossoit. Only two NHL roster spots are available, which has fueled speculation that Brossoit could be moved to a contender, with Edmonton emerging as a leading candidate. For Stars fans, seeing the Oilers potentially bolster their crease should raise eyebrows. Edmonton, fresh off a deep playoff run, is looking to avoid the same issues that hurt them late in the postseason. "The Blackhawks have too many goalies and not enough spots, and Brossoit's contract and experience make him a natural trade chip for a team like the Oilers."-Julien Trekker Chicago's goalie logjam and Berezhnoy's recent signing are detailed further at NHL.com. Dallas could see its rival upgrade as Blackhawks explore trading Laurent Brossoit Brossoit, 32, carries a $3.3 million cap hit for one more season. Drafted by Calgary in 2011, he's appeared in 140 NHL games, including time with Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Vegas, where he helped the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup in 2023. While Chicago decides, Drew Commesso continues to push for NHL time after posting a .911 save percentage over 39 AHL games. For a deeper look at Commesso's performance, his full profile is on Elite Prospects. I think if Edmonton lands Brossoit or even Commesso, Dallas may have to plan around a deeper Oilers team come playoff time, especially given how tight the Western race looks on paper.

Emerging Texans star likely to miss 2025 season

Texans wide receiver Tank Dell is likely to miss the entire 2025 season as he continues his recovery from last year’s brutal knee injury, according to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. Dell dislocated his knee and tore his ACL, MCL and LCL in a Week 16 loss to the Chiefs in December. With such a severe injury, Houston’s focus is on Dell’s health and long-term career outlook. The team wants him to get healthy rather than rushing back to play this year. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said (via Wilson) that Dell is “crushing the rehab,” but declined to offer a specific timeline. His comments hinted that the team is not counting on Dell to return this season. Injuries were always the biggest concern surrounding Dell. His 5-foot-7, 165-pound frame was already undersized by college standards; in the NFL, it’s minuscule. Sitting out this season will set up a major contract year in 2026. Dell will need to prove that he is back at full health and can remain there for an entire season while maintaining his production. Dell was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, along with teammates Trent Brown and Jimmie Ward.

Deion Sanders says he's not 'all the way recovered' amid health issue

It seems like it might be a little longer before Deion Sanders can join the rest of his Colorado coaching staff. In a video recently posted by his son, Deion Sanders Jr, the NFL legend admitted that he's not yet fully recovered from his undisclosed health issue. “You know I’m still going through something,” the head coach said. “I ain’t all the way recovered.” Almost two weeks ago, Sanders took the stage at Big 12 media day, but he didn't want to address his health issues. “I’m not here to talk about my health,” Sanders said. “I’m here to talk about my team.” According to the Athletic, Sanders, who's recovering in his home in Texas, has been in close contact with his coaching staff. Colorado athletic director Rick George also said that Sanders would "probably" report to campus within the next two weeks, per the Athletic. The former Super Bowl winner has a long history of health concerns. He had two toes amputated in 2021 because of blood clots, and he went under the knife again in 2023 after reportedly dealing with some excruciating pain. The Buffaloes are transitioning into the post-Shedeur Sanders/Travis Hunter era and looking to build from last year's 9-4 record and big win at the Alamo Bowl.

WNBA All-Star Game ratings paint a troubling picture

WNBA players sent a message to the league with T-shirts they wore ahead of the All-Star Game on Saturday night, but the ratings for the game did not exactly strengthen their stance. Prior to the All-Star Game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., Caitlin Clark and other players warmed up in shirts that said “Pay us what you owe us” across the front. The message had to do with the current state of collective bargaining agreement negotiations between the WNBA and WNBA Player’s Association. Unfortunately for the players, the television ratings for the game were not very good. Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports reported on Tuesday that the WNBA All-Star Game drew 2.19 million viewers on ABC, which was down roughly 36% from a year ago. Last year’s game featured the WNBA All-Stars against the Team USA squad that was preparing to compete in the Summer Olympics in Paris. The dip in ratings is likely another example of the type of impact Clark has had on the WNBA. Although she was a team captain for this year’s All-Star Game, Clark did not play due to a groin injury. Clark played in last year’s game for the All-Star side, as she did not make the Team USA Olympic roster. Many fans were outraged that she was snubbed from the Olympic team, which added an element of intrigue to the All-Star Game. There is no way of knowing for certain whether more fans would have watched the All-Star Game on Saturday night had Clark played. It is a safe guess, however, especially when you look at some recent trends for the league.
