The Ottawa Senators decided not to re-sign longtime goaltender Craig Anderson this offseason. With a position to fill in goal, Senators general manager Pierre Dorion had to make a move.
Ottawa announced during the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft on Wednesday that it acquired Matt Murray from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward prospect Jonathan Gruden and the 52nd overall selection in the draft.
"The acquisition of Matt Murray represents an important addition to our lineup," said Dorion. "He's a proven goaltender who has considerable high-pressure experience and someone who we're certain will serve as a exceptional mentor to our young group of upcoming goaltenders. "
After winning two Stanley Cups as the Penguins starting goaltender in 2016 and 2017, Murray's performance dipped over the last few seasons. The club recently re-signed Tristan Jarry to a three-year deal, leaving Murray as the odd man out.
Murray went 20-11-5 last season, posting a 2.87 goals-against average and .899 save percentage. Jarry was the better of the two goaltenders and earned himself the starting position.
