The Dallas Stars, Peter DeBoer, and Team Canada's Olympic hockey plans are in the spotlight as the recently fired Dallas coach will now join Jon Cooper's staff for the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina, alongside Bruce Cassidy and Rick Tocchet.

Hockey Canada announced this week that DeBoer, Cassidy, and Tocchet will serve as assistants to head coach Jon Cooper when Canada begins its Olympic run next February.

The decision keeps intact the same coaching group that guided Canada to victory at the Four Nations Faceoff earlier this year.

For DeBoer, who was dismissed by Dallas in June despite leading the Stars to three straight Western Conference Final appearances, this role offers a prominent stage to stay behind the bench and remain connected at hockey's highest levels.

The full coaching announcement, including quotes from Cooper and Hockey Canada, is detailed in CBC Sports' coverage.

Peter DeBoer joins Jon Cooper's Olympic staff after Dallas departure, keeping his coaching profile high

DeBoer's track record remains strong despite his exit from Dallas. He's coached in two Stanley Cup Finals, reached eight conference finals, and during his three seasons with the Stars, delivered consistent playoff success.

Jon Cooper emphasized the value of familiarity with this staff.

"After a successful performance at the Four Nations Faceoff, I'm thrilled to welcome Bruce, Peter, Rick, Misha, David, James, and Elliott back to Team Canada for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Together, they bring incredible experience and depth to our group."

I think this shows how DeBoer's reputation across the hockey world remains intact, even after his firing.

His Olympic role could serve as both a showcase for future NHL opportunities and a reminder of his ability to help elite rosters succeed.
