Philip Broberg’s Overtime Goal Leads Blues Past Canucks 4-3

After a rollercoaster third period that saw the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues fill the net and trade one-goal leads, Philip Broberg potted his first-career goal in overtime to send the Blues to a 4-3 win on Thursday night at Enterprise Center. The first two periods only saw offence from Zach Bolduc, but the third period was a different story as the Canucks got goals from Brock Boeser and Kiefer Sherwood and the Blues countered with Tyler Tucker and Dylan Holloway. Boeser tied it late with his second of the game to salvage a point for his team, but Broberg ultimately ended the festivities late in overtime on a backhand deke to send the Blues fans home happy.

With the win, the Blues pulled ahead of the Canucks by one point and now hold the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. Here is your game recap.

The first period was largely controlled by the Blues as they outshot the Canucks 12-3 and out-chanced them 8-4 (2-1 high-danger). However, they couldn’t get anything past Kevin Lankinen, who also got some help from his post in the final minute to keep the Blues off the board and the game scoreless.

The second was not as one-sided shots-wise, as the Blues and Canucks each threw nine shots on goal in the middle frame. But the Blues were able to get one of those to find the back of the net near the end of the period. Bolduc got credited with his 13th, but it was Quinn Hughes who tipped it past his own goaltender to give the Blues the 1-0 lead heading into the third.

The third period was full of twists and turns as the Blues and Canucks combined for five goals, with each team blowing a one-goal lead. Sherwood and Boeser pulled the Canucks into a 2-1 lead early on before the Blues got goals 24 seconds apart from Tucker and Holloway to push them back into a 3-2 advantage. Then, when it looked like the Blues were going to come away with a 3-2 victory, Boeser blasted his second of the game past Binnington at 19:56 to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Blues had a post and a disallowed goal before Broberg finally ended it with his first-career overtime winner, taking a pass from captain Brayden Schenn on a 2-on-1 and executing a backhand deke, roofing it over Lankinen for the 4-3 win.

What’s Next for the Canucks & Blues?

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday for a pair of matinee games as the Canucks will head to the Big Apple to face the New York Rangers while the Blues will stay at home and play the Chicago Blackhawks.
