Picking the Calgary Flames Hypothetical All-Star

For the first time in 12 years, NHL players will finally be able to participate in the Winter Olympics. As a result of this, the NHL will not have an All-Star game. For some teams, it’s pretty easy to figure out which players will be representing them at the All-Star game; however, for other teams, it is a bit tougher. The Flames are having a miserable season this year, but it’s a season that many think is necessary. It may be a down year for the team and many players, but the Flames must select an all-star. Let’s dive into who they may have chosen.

Nazem Kadri

The former 2023 Flames representative leads the team in scoring this year, so naturally, he would be one of the favourites to represent the Flames. Although he leads the team in scoring, he still has 37 points in 55 games. That is barely a 55-point pace for a full season. With a point production like that, it opens other options they may consider. Despite the low production, Kadri definitely has the name value and would be great in front of all the cameras that are there that weekend.

Mikael Backlund

Who would have thought that a 36-year-old defensive-minded centre would be second in team scoring? Backlund has been a bright spot for the team, and it would be nice to see the captain be awarded with his first-ever all-star selection. Backlund has 33 points in 55 games, which is quite impressive, seeing as his role is to be a defensive anchor.

Blake Coleman

Coleman is second in goals for the Flames with 13, just behind Coronato, who has 14. However, the reason why I believe he would have been an option is that he has one fewer goal than Coronato in 10 fewer games played. There is a very strong possibility that Coleman won’t be a Flame by the time the trade deadline passes, but he is not letting that distract him and is still giving his all to the team.

Honourable Mention: Devin Cooley

Yes, I know that Devin Cooley is not even the starting goalie for the Flames, but there is no denying that he has had a great season. From going to a goalie who many thought wouldn’t make the team after the preseason, to leading the league in save percentage (min 10 games played), Cooley has been a fantastic story for this franchise. On top of this, Cooley is third among goalies who have played 10 or more games in GAA. Cooley has been terrific for Calgary, and he is also just a very fun player to have. His personality is incredible and is a breath of fresh air every time he is in front of a camera. I fully understand that the Flames would not have named Cooley as an All-Star if there was a game, but I still think he is worth mentioning.

Who deserves it?

Many players are having a down year on the Flames, as the team is one of the worst in the league. Despite that, they would have still had to select a player, so who would you have picked?
