The hockey world is sending thoughts and prayers to one NHL star after some tragic personal news was announced this morning.

On Saturday, Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff announced that star centre and alternate captain Mark Scheifele lost his father early this morning. Scheifele is the longest-tenured member of the Jets and his father's passing was described as "unexpected."

“As an organization, we're doing everything we can to support him," Cheveldayoff said. “We wish, give, his family our most sincere condolences, and obviously ask that everybody respect his and their privacy at this time.

“It was certainly unexpected this morning. I don't have many of the other details or anything like that, so certainly appreciate everyone's understanding today that it's a different day for everybody here. But, you know, we're a family, and we're going to do everything we can to support our family.

“From our family, just deepest, deepest sympathies and condolences.”

Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry offered his condolences too. Speaking to reporters this morning, Lowry described Mr. Scheifele as a man with "an infectious laugh" and recalled fond memories of various trips where he came along.

“Just such an infectious laugh,” Lowry said, via SportsNet. “Spending my whole career here, numerous fathers’ trips, just the energy that he had was unmatched. . . just his joy and excitement for life. I think his positivity, his outlook on life, just a genuinely happy person. A terrible loss, obviously. Our condolences go out to. . . the whole Scheifele family. It's a terrible loss. It's tough to put into words how gutted we all feel for Mark and his family.

Thoughts and prayers from Jets fans and hockey fans across the world have been pouring in since the announcement was made:

"Sending our thoughts and love to the Scheifele family and the entire Jets organization," the Utah Mammoth official account replied.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Scheifele family and the entire Jets organization," wrote the Calgary Flames.

"Crazy to even put into words. Thoughts and prayers. I know Mark will play, his father most definitely would have wanted him to. A true hockey dad. Bring this thing home for game 7!" a third user declared.

"Extremely difficult situation. Wishing all the best to Mark and the entire Scheifele family during this tragic time," wrote a fourth.

The announcement comes mere hours before the Jets play in an absolutely critical Game 6 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Jets trail the Dallas Stars 3-2 and hope to stave off elimination in Dallas tonight in order to force a Game 7 at the Canada Life Centre.

Our hearts go out to Scheifele's family and loved ones.
