Predators sign Nino Niederreiter to two-year, $8M deal

One of the top remaining unrestricted free agents came off the board on Thursday morning.

The Nashville Predators announced that they’ve come to terms with forward Nino Niederreiter on a two-year contract. The deal is reportedly worth $8 million and carries a $4 million annual salary cap hit.

Niederreiter was selected with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders. After scoring just two goals over 64 games for the Islanders, Niederreiter was traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Cal Clutterbuck.

With the Wild, Niederreiter broke out as an effective two-way winger in the NHL. He scored 110 goals and 228 points in 434 games as a member of the Wild and also received some votes for the Selke Trophy for the league’s best defensive forward in 2016-17.

In January 2019, Niederreiter was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Victor Rask. Niederreiter played parts of four seasons with the Hurricanes and scored 69 goals and 137 points over the course of 234 games.

Most recently, Niederreiter scored 24 goals and 44 points over 75 games for Carolina in 2021-22.

The native of Chur, Switzerland will turn 30 years old in September.
