Radko Gudas isn’t exactly hunting fights, but he won’t back down if one starts — even with a bum knee. After serving his suspension, he’s got Toronto next, and everyone still remembers that knee-to-knee on Auston Matthews that ended his year.
Gudas knows retaliation’s coming and says he’s ready for it. He left Thursday’s game in Calgary hurt and missed the Edmonton loss, reportedly in a boot — but trainers can protest all they want; he’s adamant he wants to play Monday in Toronto.
That’s classic Gudas. He’s not one for half measures. The guy relishes the physical chess match, knows where the edges are, and knows the stakes when the Maple Leafs roll into town. For him, this isn’t just another box to check on the schedule. There’s retribution in the air, and he doesn’t want to miss it, one way or another.
The Ducks, for their part, are trying to think like playoff general managers. They sit atop the Pacific and have to balance momentary bravado against the team’s long-term health. They likely don’t want to shrug off a nagging injury and end up paying for it when the postseason comes around. Medical staff will have the final say after a Sunday evaluation, and that decision will tell us whether this turns into a gutsy Gudas cameo or another game watched from the press box.
There’s also the theatre of it. A player honouring the code by pushing to suit up despite injury limitations always adds to the narrative. If he does play, anyway, it challenges the Maple Leafs to respond somehow.
Bottom line: Gudas is stuck in that old-school hockey bind — Matthews is done for the year, Gudas is banged up, but he still doesn’t want Toronto thinking he’s backing off.
Coach Craig Berube even threw down a bit of a challenge, calling out his team for not meeting Gudas head-on. He was clear that he saw it as the wrong kind of behaviour. Gudas doesn’t want to come across like he’s dodging what’s coming, but at the same time, his team isn’t eager to risk him further until he’s fully healthy.
This is pure old-school hockey — pride, loyalty and that tug-of-war between staying safe and stepping up.
