The New York Rangers provided an update on captain J.T. Miller's status after his injury scare at practice on Monday.
Miller, who suffered a noncontact lower-body injury at the start of the week, has been ruled out of Thursday’s preseason game against the New Jersey Devils.
Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan addressed the situation on Wednesday, clarifying the team’s approach with the 32-year-old.
“My understanding is that he’s day to day. We’re obviously erring on the side of caution,” Sullivan said. “He will not play Thursday. I’ll tell you that and we’ll make decisions from there, but I believe that he is trending the right way, and we’ll get him back on the ice in a timely manner.”

Miller left the ice in visible discomfort during Monday’s skate and did not return. The Rangers captain has since missed consecutive practices as trainers continue to evaluate him.
That said, the franchise has avoided labeling the setback as anything more serious than a short-term concern, with Miller expected to suit up for New York's season opener on Tuesday.
The injury, however, comes at a pivotal moment for both Miller and the Rangers. Sullivan is preparing for his first regular season behind the New York bench, while Miller enters his first season as team captain.
The Rangers reacquired Miller in a mid-season trade with the Vancouver Canucks in January and officially gave him the “C” before camp, a move general manager Chris Drury said was aimed at reinforcing the team’s identity.
Miller delivered 35 points in 32 games after the trade last year, reaffirming his place as one of the team’s most impactful forwards even such a short span of time.
Over his career, he has recorded 709 points in 871 games across stints with the Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Canucks.
Given Sullivan's words, it's fair to assume that the Rangers expect Miller back before puck-drop next week. The Rangers open the regular season Oct. 7 at Madison Square Garden against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
