Rangers’ James Reimer Out Day-To-Day

The New York Rangers may have pulled goaltender James Reimer from Monday’s game for more than a rusty start. The 38 year old missed Tuesday morning’s practice with an upper-body injury that will hold him out day-to-day per Vince Z. Mercogliano of The Athletic.

Making his first start with New York on Monday, Reimer allowed a goal on the first shot he faced as a Ranger. He then ceded two more goals before the end of the first period. New York returned for the second with Dylan Garand in net, ending what was a historic start for the recently-signed Reimer despite the sour result. Suiting up for the Rangers brought Reimer up to nine teams across his 17-year career, tying Cam Talbot for the most teams played for by a goaltender.

Reimer’s contract came to fruition after he posted a shutout win in his only appearance on a professional tryout with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. He leapfrogged Spencer Martin on New York’s depth chart following that performance – and was expected to provide some relief to Rangers starter Garand.

Luckily, Reimer will have until Sunday to nurse his new injury. The Rangers will need to bring Martin back to the NHL roster if Reimer isn’t ready for that matchup – though Garand is likely to start in either scenario. The 24-year-old Garand has posted an 8-4-5 record and .899 save percentage since taking over the starting role for the injured Igor Shesterkin. Martin posted an .839 save percentage in 35 minutes during his only NHL appearance this season.

While New York monitors Reimer’s return, they will also monitor the progress of summer addition Joonas Korpisalo, who hasn’t yet debuted for the team due to a lower-body injury. Korpisalo is expected to return by the second week of November, which could further complicate the Rangers’ goalie room.
