Rangers’ Looking To Capitalize On Strong Olympics By Trocheck

As the New York Rangers continue to stumble through another season where they have failed to meet expectations, the team is beginning its retooling process. The first domino to fall was the trade of former Rangers star Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings. The next piece out the door seems to be Vincent Trocheck.

The recent Olympian had a great showing for the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team. Elliotte Friedman gave an update in the most recent iteration of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast:

“Everybody’s tied Minnesota to him — I think that one’s obvious. I think L.A. really likes him, he’s stated that his preference is the East… I heard some teams said that they suspected Pittsburgh could be around Trocheck. He’s obviously from there.”

Trocheck, 32, carries a cap hit of 5.625 million through the 2028-29 season. This deal should age well as the salary cap continues to rise. In addition, Trocheck’s game is more centered around his defensive ability and high hockey IQ. These are skills that typically age well. This season, Trocheck has scored 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists) through 44 games. He’s even producing points at a faster rate than last season, which is a great sign for his long-term offensive outlook.

Minnesota Wild Highly Interested

This is not the first time Trocheck has been linked to the Wild; it builds on recent speculation. So it should come as no surprise that the Wild are interested. For one, Minnesota seems to be going all in this year, believing that they have a real chance at winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

Wild GM Bill Guerin also served as GM for the U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey team, where he selected Trocheck for his defensive reliability. Adding Trocheck would be great for the Wild’s penalty kill, which has had struggles at times this season. Unfortunately, this does not align with Trocheck’s Eastern preference. Guerin could be able to convince him otherwise.

Pittsburgh Penguins In The Mix

With Trocheck being born and raised in Pittsburgh, it makes complete sense that the Penguins would be interested in bringing in the hometown player. This may also be the Penguins’ last real chance at making a splash in the playoffs during the Sidney Crosby era. Adding Trocheck to this team would make an already strong defensive team even more difficult to play against.

This location seems to be exactly what Trocheck would be interested in, as it has been reported that he wants to stay in the East. The only problem is that Pittsburgh may not be interested in giving up the assets the Rangers are targeting for a player of this calibre.

Los Angeles Kings Need A Spark

The last team that seems really in on Trocheck is the Kings. With Kopitar retiring at the conclusion of this season, the Kings are in desperate need of adding center depth to this roster. With recent play, the Kings have begun to slide out of the playoff picture. This would be seen as unacceptable, as they just acquired Panarin from the Rangers as well. So why not add another Ranger?

Trocheck would be a great hockey fit for the Kings. He would greatly help improve the lacklustre penalty killing, and would help provide some much-needed scoring prowess too. The one thing standing in the way is that Trocheck prefers to stay in the East. So even though he may fit perfectly on the roster, that is only part of the story. It’s possible that he could be convinced otherwise, but there’s really no guarantee.
