Conor Sheary was always likely to make the New York Rangers' opening night roster based on his history with head coach Mike Sullivan.
The 33-year-old wing initially joined the Rangers on a professional tryout contract (PTO). His deal is a two-way contract for the league minimum salary of $775,000.
Sheary skated in four games for the Blueshirts during the preseason. He registered one goal and two assists in exhibition contests.
The 10-year NHL veteran only dressed for five regular season games for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2024-25. He was assigned to the AHL's Syracuse Crunch for the majority of last season.
The Melrose, Massachusetts native chipped in 61 points (20 goals, 41 assists) in 59 games for the Crunch last season.
Sheary and the Lightning mutually agreed to terminate his remaining contract in June, allowing the Rangers to offer him a tryout.
The 5-foot-8 wing will be counted on by the Blueshirts to bring energy and veteran leadership. He is likely to begin the season on the left wing of the Rangers' third line alongside center Jusso Parssinen and right wing Taylor Raddysh.
The Rangers assigned forward Brett Berard to the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack on Monday. This means that 22-year-old center Noah Laba has made the opening night roster. Berard recorded 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 35 games for the Blueshirts last season.
Laba was one of the standout players of the Rangers' preseason. The Blueshirt Faithful are eager to witness his playmaking abilities and his determination across 200 feet of ice.
Sheary understands Sullivan's system better than anyone on the roster. He and Sullivan enjoyed tremendous success in Pittsburgh.
Sullivan and Sheary captured consecutive Stanley Cup championships for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. Sheary excelled during the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs as a rookie by registering 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 23 postseason games.
Sheary has recorded 267 points (124 goals, 143 assists) across 593 career NHL regular season games.
The Rangers will be the fifth stop of his NHL career. He previously skated for the Penguins, Lightning, Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals.
New York will open the regular season on Oct. 7 against the Penguins at Madison Square Garden.
