Rangers sign Conor Sheary to PTO

The New York Rangers have signed forward Conor Cherry to a professional tryout, according to New York Post reporter Mollie Walker.

Sheary, 33, spent the majority of the 2024-25 campaign with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, the minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning. In 59 AHL games, Sheary scored 20 goals and recorded 41 assists for 61 points.

On June 29, the Lightning placed Sheary on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. The Winchester, Mass., native had one year left on a. three-year, $6 million deal he signed ahead of the 2023-24 season.

It was Sheary’s first trip back to the AHL since 2015-16, when after spending parts of three seasons with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, he was called up to the NHL by the Pittsburgh Penguins, helping the team win two Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017.

Through 10 NHL seasons, Sheary has scored 124 goals and recorded 143 assists for 267 points in 593 career regular-season games with the Lightning, Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals. He also has seven goals and 16 assists for 23 points in 72 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

In parts of four AHL seasons, Sheary has 47 goals and 95 assists for 142 points in 149 regular-season games with the Penguins and Crunch. He also has 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points in 25 career Calder Cup Playoff games.

The Rangers went 39-36-7 with 85 points in 2024-25, finishing fifth in the Metropolitan Division and six points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Forward Artemi Panarin led the team in all offensive categories, scoring 37 goals and recording 52 assists for 89 points.

New York fired head coach Peter Laviolette on April 19, just two days after the regular season. On May 2, the team announced they hired former Penguins bench boss Mike Sullivan to a multi-year deal. Sullivan had previously served as an assistant coach for the Rangers from 2009 to 2013.
