Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson has addressed recent rumors suggesting he would be open to a trade out of Calgary. The speculation, sparked by a report from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, claimed Andersson “would be open to a move and would welcome one.” That led to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis asking the defenseman, who gave a slightly different take on his situation.

Andersson was quick to say during a one-on-one interview with Sportsnet’s Eric Francis. “I love playing here, and I’ve always loved playing here—that’s never going to change.” For good measure, he added:

“I hate the Oilers, I hate the Canucks, and that’s just the way I am. Of course, I would love to stay here, but I’ve heard from everyone else who has been in my situation that it’s a business. So, we’ll see what happens.”

Andersson Says a Trade From Flames Is Out of His Hands

Andersson admitted that he’s not got much say in what happens to his contract in Calgary. Because got limited control due to a six-team no-trade list in his contract, he noted, “I’ve got no say in it. July 1 is when I can re-sign, and we’re in January.”

Andersson added that it’s all up to GM Craig Conroy and President Don Maloney. He said, it was out of his hands what happens to him until my contract is up unless an extension is signed. “It’s not like I’m sitting on a full no-move,” he explained.

With a year and a half remaining on his deal at $4.55 million annually, Andersson will be a coveted player at this season’s NHL trade deadline. Teams are always looking for right-shot defensemen and he’s among the best potentially available. He’s steady, 6’1”, and over 200 pounds. He’s got a nice blend of skill, size, and leadership that will make him a sought-after commodity.

It’s clear Andersson loves the Flames, but he also understands this is a business. For now, the ball remains in the Flames’ court.
