Rasmus Andersson to Leafs Reignited

Is Rasmus Andersson to the Toronto Maple Leafs a real possibility? On the Tuesday, December 16th, edition of Insider Trading, TSN’s hockey insider, Pierre LeBrun, has reported that the Maple Leafs have circled back to the Calgary Flames to reopen discussions surrounding right-shot defenseman Rasmus Andersson.

The key new information for a deal to happen is that Andersson is open to signing an extension with Toronto as part of the deal. An important detail that wasn’t there the last time Toronto showed interest. An extension does add more of a salary cap management element to the mix. However, it’s one I’m sure Leafs GM Brad Treliving is willing to figure out. He is starting to feel the pressure to upgrade this team before things get even worse.

Andersson, 29, has been one of the Flames’ most relied upon defensemen for a few seasons. He logs a ton of minutes in all situations. Last season, he registered 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points in 81 games. He has registered 22 points in 33 games thus far this season.

For the Maple Leafs, the appeal of Andersson is obvious. They have searched for a legitimate right-shot defenseman who can quarterback a power play. Andersson checks all those boxes, and his age aligns with Toronto’s competitive window rather than a short-term rental mindset. If they can get him to sign a 4-5 year extension, that works perfectly with their competitive window.

Having the option of an extension matters for the Leafs. Toronto has been burned by other teams before by having to pay steep prices for players without long-term security. Knowing that Andersson is open to committing beyond this season lowers the risk and makes the asset cost a bit easier to justify.

Rasmus Andersson is Open to an Extension

As a fan, this feels like just another rare trade rumor, but one that actually makes sense. There is nothing flashy about Andersson, but his offensive flair and booming shot are precisely what the Maple Leafs need to help balance their attack, especially on the power-play.

In Calgary, the Flames continue to use the retooling line. Andersson carries value because he is under contract and productive, but Calgary must weigh whether moving him accelerates their long-term plans. Toronto’s prospect pool and future picks would almost certainly be central to any package. Though the cupboards are pretty bare at the moment. A deal for Andersson will likely cost the Maple Leafs defense prospect Ben Danford.

Andersson’s ability to handle controlled exits would help the Leafs’ forwards attack with speed instead of retrieving dump-ins. Something they have been doing a lot of lately. Although nothing is imminent, the fact that Toronto has re-engaged talks with the Flames signals intent. Teams don’t normally reopen talks unless something has changed, and Andersson’s willingness to discuss an extension is that change that Treliving and the Leafs needed.

Andersson has long been linked to the Maple Leafs, and if this trade happens, I don’t think it would surprise many. It makes too much sense, given what the Leafs need and GM Brad Treliving’s previous connection to the player.
