Ray Bourque wants Torey Krug to play entire career with Bruins

When Boston Bruins legend Ray Bourque says he wants a player to remain with the organization for the entirety of his career, you've got to make it happen, right?

B's defenseman Torey Krug will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and despite saying he'll take somewhat of a hometown discount to remain in Boston, general manager Don Sweeney has yet to get a deal done.

The coronavirus pandemic could potentially be a reason why Krug and the Bruins have yet to agree on a new contract but Bourque, a Bruins team consultant, doesn't want to see the blueliner play for anyone else.

"I just hope he gets to live out his career here in Boston," Bourque told The Athletic of Krug, according to NHL.com. "It'll be great for everybody, and I know he knows that, but he knows the business side of it as well and that always makes it tough."

Krug, an undrafted free agent, has been a staple in Boston's defense since the 2013-14 campaign when he tallied 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) in 79 games.

While he can be somewhat of a liability on the defensive side of the puck, Krug is the Bruins main puck mover and power play specialist, so losing him could end up being extremely costly for Boston.

The 29-year-old is set to receive a large raise this offseason after earning $5.25 million per season since 2016. Some NHL insiders believe Krug could receive around $8 million per year on his new deal, but it's unlikely that Boston shells out that much dough, as no one on their current roster makes more than $7.25 million per season.

It's hard to see Krug playing for anyone else but Boston, but the longer Sweeney waits to get a deal done, the larger the possibility he lands somewhere else.
