A 4-2 victory by Sweden over Canada at the IIHF World Championship on Sunday put a bronze medal around the neck of Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond. It also served to extend a unique streak among Red Wings players.
It’s the sixth straight world tourney in which a Red Wings player is coming home with a medal.
The streak began in 2018, also with Sweden, Gustav Nyquist won a gold medal that year.
In 2019, Anthony Mantha won a silver medal with Canada. The 2020 IIHF World Championship was canceled due to COVID-19.
When the even resumed in 21, Red Wings defenseman Troy Stecher would help the Canadian team garner a gold medal. In 2022, both Jakub Vrana and Filip Hronek won gold medals with the Czech Republic.
Last year, Joe Veleno was a gold medal winner with Canada, while Moritz Seider helped Germany win silver, the country’s first world tournament medal since 1953.

While Raymond was winning a medal, Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry and goalie prospect Trey Augustine come home empty-handed after the USA lost 1-0 to eventual gold medal winners Czechia in the quarterfinals.
Sweden went 8-1 in the tournament. Unfortaunately, the only loss by the Swedes was to the Czechs in the semifinals.
Red Wings Yzerman Big On World Tourney
The Swedish Hockey Federation took out insurance to enable Raymond, who will become a restricted free agent on July 1, the ability to play in the event without concern for his hockey future should he have been injured.
Detroit GM Steve Yzerman played three times for Canada in the world championship. He won silver medals in 1985 and 1989.

Yzerman is a big proponent of his players participating in the world tourney.
“Sure,” Yzerman said. “I played in them, I’ve been a part of them in management. I think they’re great opportunities for guys, great experiences.
“To play international hockey is a lot of fun. To get a chance to win a gold medal is very exciting.”
