Recap: Wranglers blowout Condors in Sunday matinee game

This penalty kill didn’t go Calgary’s way as Viljami Marjala opened the scoring at 2:21 on the man advantage. He caught the Wranglers on a bad change when a turnover happened in the offensive zone and had all the room to beat Owen Say.

A few minutes later, the Wranglers were penalty killing again when William Stromgren was called for slashing. Thankfully, his penalty was cut short by a call against the Condors. Calgary got some more life into their game at 12:37 when Turner Ottenbreit scored his first as a Wrangler. Nick Cicek and Sam Morton set him up for this marker. 

The Wranglers ended up taking the lead very late in the period when Hunter Brzustewicz scored his fourth of the year from the offensive zone faceoff dot off a dish from Martin Frk. Clark Bishop also assisted on this goal that came four seconds before the end of the period. 

At the end of the first, the Wranglers had a 2-1 lead and were behind 8-6 in shots. In the second, the Condors took a penalty for hooking at 4:35 but the Wranglers weren’t able to get any looks on this chance. Once they were able to corral the puck back in the zone at 14:17, Aydar Suniev scored his second of the year off the rush. 

Suniev’s body language looked as if he was going to go for a pass, and at the last minute went for the shot and beat Ingram. Turner Ottenbreit picked up the lone helper for his second point of the game. 

The Condors took two more seats in the box before the end of the period but Calgary wasn’t able to tack on any more goals on the special teams. The second ended with the Wranglers up 3-1 and they slightly outshot the visitors 7-6. 

In the third, Calgary got another on the board in the first half of the frame when Sam Morton and Andrew Basha broke out on a rush and it looked like Basha may have scored but Morton got the last touch before the puck crossed the line. Basha got the lone assist and this goal came at 6:40. 

Calgary was sitting pretty comfortably the rest of the period and opportunities flared up for them again last in the frame. In the last five minutes of the third, the Condors pulled their goalie for a six on four while Jeremie Poirier was serving a slashing call. This eventually led to Dryden Hunt scoring on the empty net at 17:27 with assists going to Rory Kerins and William Stromgren. 

The Wranglers’ last goal came from Matvei Gridin when he got Connor Ingram tied up with his defender behind the net while he was trying to play the puck. Gridin got to the puck quickly and had a mostly empty net to bury the puck in. Sam Morton picked up another point on this goal with the assist.

Shortly after this goal, there was a scrum behind the net that lead to a roughing call against Andrew Basha and misconducts against Lucas Ciona and Basha again. It didn’t matter much with just over 20 seconds to go in the game and Calgary secured their win at the final buzzer.

This 6-1 win put Calgary at five wins in a row and the three stars went to Owen Say for the third, Sam Morton for the second and Turner Ottenbreit for the first. Shots finished up 22-21 for Bakersfield.
