The Detroit Red Wings have acquired forward Craig Smith and goaltender Petr Mrazek from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Joe Veleno.

The 25-year-old Veleno has scored five goals and recorded 10 points in 56 games with the Red Wings this season. He sits fifth on Detroit with 93 hits this season and is fourth among team forwards with 32 blocked shots over an average ice time of 11:53. Originally selected by Detroit in the first round (30th overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, the 6-foot-1, 201-pound native of Montreal has registered 35 goals and 74 points in 288 career regular-season NHL games, all with the Red Wings.

The Red Wings have added two players in the deal as they hope to earn a playoff spot. The 33-year-old Mrazek, who is returning to the team that drafted him 141st overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, has a 10-19-2 record this season with a .890 save percentage and 3.46 goals-against average this seasons with the Blackhawks. The 6-foot-2 netminder has one more season on his deal remaining after this season with an annual cap hit of $4.25 million.

The other addition to the Red Wings is 35-year-old forward Craig Smith, who has scored nine goals and recorded 16 points in 40 games with the Blackhawks this season. The 6-foot-1 centre is currently playing on a one-year, $1 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. His addition will help to provide some depth scoring to the Red Wings’ bottom six forward group.
