The Detroit Red Wings lost their 2025-26 NHL season opener to the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena as the Canadiens stopped 31 of 32 shots on their way to a 5-1 victory.

The rough opening game was tempered with a strong wave of nostalgia from Red Wings dignitaries including longtime play-by-play voice Ken Kal, who took to X to reveal a special tribute.

Kal's tribute was made to the late, great Red Wings owner Mike Illitch as he shared a special post for Wings diehards on X.

Kal's Illitch Story, Tribute

Kal revealed his tribute on X as he called to mind the legendary Wings owner, who died in February 2017 at age 87.

"100 years of Red Wings hockey," Kal wrote.

"Had to wear this special tie for the opener. It was the tie I wore when I interviewed with Mr. Mike Illitch in August 1995 then got the job as the radio Pxp voice of the Red Wings."

Red Wings' Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane Begins

The Red Wings are planning fan-friendly events for team backers this season in remembrance of the team's first ever season.

The Wings' franchise began in 1926 as the Detroit Cougars and has won 11 Stanley Cups championships all-time, good for third among all NHL franchises behind the Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Wings are incorporating a Centennial jerseys, a Centennial center ice logo and Centennial red helmets with vintage Meijer logos for the first time in franchise history this season.

Kal's silky smooth radio voice has delighted Motor City area fans dating back to the days of Sergei Federov and Steve Yzerman.

The current Red Wings won't be confused with any of Illitch's classic championship teams, but fans have cautiously optimistic hopes for better nights going forward.
