Now knee deep into July, the NHL offseason has reached a point where teams are having to make hard decisions. It's time for the Detroit Red Wings to do exactly that in an attempt to move out from under the cloud that's looming over the future of the once-proud franchise.
Dylan Larkin wants out and has requested a trade. Red Wings executive vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman confirmed Larkin's request during a recent media session after the NHL Draft.
However, Larkin isn't doing much to help the team accommodate his request.
The Red Wings just can't accommodate his request based on the parameters set. Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press revealed one of the main reasons there's been little traction on Larkin actually being dealt is he's yet to expand his initial list of preferred destinations. If that's the case, the Red Wings need to demand he do so or tell him to report to camp in the fall.
In two-plus months since requesting trade from Red Wings, Dylan Larkin has not expanded his list (he has no-trade clause) from Florida, Minnesota, Vegas. No offers from those teams have intrigued Wings. They want value-now players for a 1C with very favorable contract.

Larkin's list is the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights. These are three most players would desire playing for. The Panthers are a recent dynasty and are gearing up to go for it all again. The Knights are coming off a Stanley Cup Final appearance and have an established track record as one of the most successful organizations of the last decade. And the Wild, while yet to get over the hump, are a consistent playoff team with a solid core centered around Quinn Hughes.
Having only experienced the playoffs once in his career, Larkin is seeking refuge in a wining environment and using his no-movement clause as leverage. That's understandable for an All-Star caliber player who will turn 30 at the end of July, especially after the Red Wings endured an historic collapse that extended the team's playoff drought to a full 10 years.
It's just not Yzerman's job to emphasize with Larkin's personal situation. Yzerman is tasked with doing what's in the best interest of Detroit. Simply put, he's not obligated to do what Larkin wants if it's not in the best interest of the Red Wings as well.
Based on what Larkin's three top teams have reportedly offered, and what Florida sent to Ottawa for Brady Tkachuk, here's no path forward to make a trade work for the Red Wings. The Panthers shipped three first-round picks to the Senators, avoiding giving up any proven NHL talent.
Yzerman has made it clear a similar type of deal won't work for him, and it shouldn't. In order for Detroit to accept a trade without receiving a Larkin-like player, Yzerman would have to be willing to go backwards in the rebuilding process. Doing so would alienate the fanbase, causing irreparable damage in his relationship with passionate Red Wings supporters who have grown frustrated in the stewardship of a legendary figure they once worshipped as a player.
Here's the problem: the three teams mentioned are trying to build a Stanley Cup contender in 2026-27, making it unlikely they'd be willing to part with anyone on their active rosters, let alone a player close to Larkin's level.
While hockey fans and media can debate Larkin's overall value, he's a No. 1 center to Detroit and he's coming off a season in which he scored 34 goals and registered 67 points in 74 games. He's also surpassed 30 goals and 65 points in five-straight campaigns, showing a consistency that will be missed on the ice.
Unless Larkin is willing to expand his list, and do so immediately, Yzerman needs to inform him he's currently under contract through the 2030-31 season. It might be awkward to proceed with a captain that has publicized an interest in leaving, but giving in to a demand without gaining an appropriate package would harm the Red Wings far more than any awkwardness possibly could.
