Red Wings Raymond Roughed up by Germans

An elbow to the face from a German player left Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond in pain. He was also seething in anger that no penalty was called on the play.

During the second period of Monday’s 6-1 win by Sweden over Germany at the IIHF World Championship, Raymond could be seen scolding the officials after he was smashed in the face by an elbow from German defenseman Kai Wissman.

Even Wissman was appearing to share Raymond’s assessment of the altercation. He would situate himself in the penalty box until referees Jan Hribik of Czechia and Michael Tscheriig of Switzerland came to tell him that there was no foul called on the play.

Raymond was perplexed by this non-call.

“I got an elbow in the face, but the judges didn’t think the same,” Raymond told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se. “It is the judges who judge and decide. You have to follow that.”

At the time that Wissman’s elbow was connecting with Raymond’s nose, the Swedish Red Wings player wasn’t feeling as diplomatic.

“I swung up and saw that he was going to stand on top of me,” Raymond said. “So I tried to be careful. It wasn’t so nice.”

The blow to the face left Raymond with a reddish hue to his nose. However, he insists that he’s fine and there are no after effects from the elbow smash.

“It wasn’t that dangerous anyway,” Raymond said. “It didn’t go to the head. I was lucky in my misfortune. It mostly hit the nose and straight in the face. It’s probably red and scratched now.”

Red Wings Raymond Held Off Scoresheet

Raymond was luckier than teammate Alex Lyon. USA Hockey was sending the Detroit goalie home Sunday after a skate cut into his hand during the USA-Germany game. That’s leaving the USA goaltending the hands of ex-Red Wings netminder Alex Nedeljkovic and Detroit prospect Trey Augustine.

They split duties in Monday’s 5-4 overtime loss to Slovakia. Nedeljkovic was coming out of the game after the second period with the USA trailing 4-1. Augustine took over and would surrender the game winner in OT, taking the loss.

Despite Sweden’s offensive outburst against the Germans, Raymond was unable to register on the scoresheet for the first time in three games. He scored a goal in each of Sweden’s first two wins.
