The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to terms on a seven-year contract extension with forward Alex DeBrincat, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Tuesday evening.
According to PuckPedia, DeBrincat’s new contract is worth $13 million per season. The 28-year-old winger had been slated to become an unrestricted free agent upon the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.
A product of Farmington Hills, Mich., DeBrincat has four goals and eight points in six games with the Red Wings this year. The 5’8″ right wing scored a pair of goals and added an assist in Detroit’s 5-4 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
Despite Detroit’s tough 5-4 overtime loss to New Jersey, there appears to be an important off-ice victory for the Red Wings.

The Red Wings originally acquired DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators in the summer of 2023 in exchange for Donovan Sebrango, Dominik Kubalik, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2024 fourth-round pick. That same offseason, DeBrincat signed a four-year contract with the Red Wings carrying a $7.875 million cap hit.
DeBrincat tied his existing career high with 41 goals and set a new career high with 85 points in 82 games with the Red Wings during the 2025-26 regular season. Now, he’s locked in with the Red Wings for the foreseeable future, even as the team continues to navigate the challenging situations involving Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson.
A second-round pick (No. 39 overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 NHL Draft, DeBrincat spent his junior career with the OHL’s Erie Otters (playing alongside the likes of Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome) before turning pro with the Blackhawks in 2017-18. He quickly established himself as a go-to option in Chicago, scoring 41 goals twice and helping the Blackhawks reach the playoffs in 2020 before being traded to Ottawa in 2022.
In 702 career NHL games over parts of 10 seasons with the Blackhawks, Senators, and Red Wings, DeBrincat has collected 298 goals and 603 points. He’s added two goals and six points in nine playoff contests.
