Remembering Oscar Klefbom: The Career That Should Have Been'

Looking back now, it's hard not to feel a little sad when you think about Oscar Klefbom. There was a time when it looked as though he would become one of the great defensemen in Edmonton Oilers history. He wasn't flashy like Paul Coffey or dominant in the way Chris Pronger could be, but he was becoming the player every good team needs. He could play in every situation, move the puck, log heavy minutes, and make life easier for everyone around him.

Klefbom never played another NHL game after the 2019-20 season.

Back in 2020, it wasn't unreasonable to wonder where Klefbom might eventually rank among the franchise's all-time defensemen. He was only 26 years old. Most defensemen are just reaching their peak at that age, and it seemed entirely possible he would spend another decade wearing an Oilers sweater.

Instead, his body had other plans. His shoulder problems never truly went away. Multiple surgeries followed, and despite years of trying to return, Klefbom eventually had to accept what every athlete fears: sometimes determination simply isn't enough. He officially retired in 2024 without ever playing another NHL game after the 2019-20 season.

That's what makes Klefbom such an easy player to remember fondly. His career didn't end because he stopped caring or because the game passed him by. It ended because his body wouldn't cooperate.

Injuries are a reality for professional hockey players.

Sometimes we forget how difficult that reality can be for professional athletes. Fans often assume every player gets to choose when they retire. In truth, many don't. Hockey chooses for them.

For Edmonton, Klefbom became one of the biggest "what if" stories of the Connor McDavid era. Imagine those Oilers teams with a healthy Klefbom anchoring the blue line during McDavid's prime. Maybe Darnell Nurse isn't asked to shoulder quite so much responsibility, and he’d still be around. Maybe the organization doesn't spend years searching for another reliable top-pair defenseman. We'll never know.

Klefbom was an elite top-pairing blueliner for the Oilers.

What we do know is that Klefbom gave the Oilers everything he had while he could. In just 378 NHL games, he established himself as a dependable top-pair defender and earned the respect of teammates and fans alike. Not every memorable career ends with a Stanley Cup or a Hall of Fame induction. Sometimes a player is remembered because everyone could see what he was becoming before injuries took it all away.

Oscar Klefbom belongs in that conversation. He's one of the most talented Oilers whose career simply ended far too soon.
