The Calgary Flames are reportedly trying hard to sign undrafted NCAA free agent goaltender Callum Tung. The starter for the University of Connecticut Huskies this past season, Tung’s team was just eliminated in the NCAA playoffs, thus the sudden news on interest from NHL clubs.
According to Elliotte Friedman in the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Flames are one of several NHL teams who are heavily interested in signing Tung, who has blossomed into a fantastic goalie prospect. Here’s what Friedman had to say:
He’s a really talented young goaltender. People were drooling about him. There are a bunch of NHL teams chasing after this guy, and the expectation is that he’s going to have an opportunity to go right away, and probably will.
I know that Calgary was one of the teams that made a real chase at him.
The Flames did sign another NCAA goalie earlier this month in Owen Say, however you can never have too many good prospects so it makes sense for the Flames to continue to pursue top talent.
Tung is your classic late bloomer goalie. He’s huge at 6’3″ and 198lbs, and played his first noteworthy season in 2023–24 for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the BCHL. This past season, he joined UConn and put up stellar numbers.
Here are Tung’s stats from the past two seasons:
Season | League | GP | GAA | SV% | SHO | Record |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2023–24 | BCHL | 38 | 2.80 | 0.917 | 3 | 22-14-1 |
2024-25 | NCAA | 15 | 2.01 | 0.933 | 0 | 10-4-1 |
Friedman went on to say that although the Flames have made a serious push to sign Tung, they might be in tough to sign him due to a logjam in their system.
It’s a challenge for them, because obviously they have Wolf and the guy who beat Tung the other day, Arsenii Sergeev, from Penn State. He was a seventh-round pick in 2021 that kid looks like he’s really starting to develop, too, and so Calgary’s a bit loaded with young goaltenders. So I think it would be a bigger challenge for them to get him.
I don’t think the Flames were the only team looking at this kid and trying to convince him to come out, so we’ll see where that goes over the next couple of days
He’s not wrong. The Flames have a ton of goalies in the system, and just added another one earlier this month in Owen Say. However, there is definitely room for a player to earn an AHL starting job next season, and Tung might be enticed by that offer.
Next season, they have Dustin Wolf and presumably Devin Cooley in the NHL, and then a bunch of other goalies battling for pro spots: Waltteri Ignatjew (pending RFA), Owen Say, Connor Murphy (pending RFA), Arsenii Sergeev (unsigned), Kirill Zarubin (unsigned), Yegor Yegorov (unsigned), and Daniil Chechelev (unsigned).
Ignatjew isn’t a lock to be the Wranglers starter next season, and that’s a prime job up for grabs.
Perhaps Tung zeroes in on that spot and signs with the Flames. Time will tell.
