Report: Maple Leafs mutually part ways with AGM Laurence Gilman

Laurence Gilman and the Toronto Maple Leafs mutually agreed to part ways, The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun reports.

Gilman served as an assistant general manager with the Maple Leafs from 2018-19 to 2021-2022, before moving into a senior vice president role with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs organization, Gilman previously served as a hockey operations executive with the Arizona Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks franchises.

The 59-year-old hasn’t been listed on Toronto’s management pages since 2022, according to Kyle Cushman of theScore. Ryan Hardy currently serves as the Maple Leafs’ assistant general manager, minor league operations and as the general manager of the Marlies.

Gilman is expected to be courted on the open market for executive roles, LeBrun reports. He was previously considered a lead candidate for the Canucks’ GM vacancy two years ago, where Patrik Allvin was ultimately hired. During his tenure with the Canucks, Gilman was known for his work within the team’s salary cap management.

Gilman was also previously retained by the NHL to help with their expansion developments in March 2016.

The executive rarely spoke on record with the Maple Leafs and has been considered an enigma during his tenure with the franchise. It will be compelling to see where Gilman lands on the open market, given his extensive resume in hockey operations.
