Alex Ovechkin finally reached 900 NHL goals on Wednesday, against the St. Louis Blues. He became the first player in league history to hit that mark and reached the 900-goal club. The goal came on a spin-around backhand early in the second period.
Even Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals captain, sounded jubilant after reaching that special milestone, and being the only player to do it.
"Of course, it's, you know, [a] huge number," Ovechkin said to the media after the 6-1 win over the Blues. "No one ever did it in NHL history and be uh first player ever do it. It's a special moment. So, yeah, it's nice. It's over and, you know, it's nice to get it in the home stand at home so the fans, the family, can be here and, yeah, it's pretty cool."
Now, let's revisit the ten milestone moments for Ovechkin en route to 900 career goals.
Ovechkin's first NHL goal came on October 5, 2005, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He scored twice in his debut game, a 3-2 win. It was a clear early sign of his scoring talent.
Ovechkin reached 100 goals on October 12, 2007, against the New York Rangers. He needed only 167 games to do it. His powerful shot and steady play made him one of the best early in his career.
Ovechkin's 200th goal came on February 5, 2009, against the Los Angeles Kings. He continued scoring at an impressive pace. Few players could match his consistency at that time, as he took 178 more games.
On April 5, 2011, Ovechkin scored his 300th goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Defenses focused more on him, but he kept producing. His mix of skill and strength helped him stay effective, and it took 162 more games.
Ovechkin reached 400 goals on December 20, 2013, against the Carolina Hurricanes. It took 168 more games, and he continued to lead Washington’s offense each season. It was an empty net goal.
Ovechkin scored his 500th goal on January 10, 2016, against the Ottawa Senators. It was another major milestone in his career, and this time he took 190 games to go from 400 to 500 goals. He joined a small group of players (49 so far) to reach that mark.
Ovechkin's 600th goal came on March 12, 2018, against the Winnipeg Jets. He reached it in just 155 games after his previous milestone. His quick release and accuracy remained strong as he shot it through traffic. Later that year, he won his first Stanley Cup with the Capitals.
Ovechkin scored his 700th goal on February 22, 2020, against the New Jersey Devils. Fans across the league celebrated the achievement, as he completed another 100 in just 162 games. It confirmed his place among hockey’s legends. He reached the milestone a few weeks after surpassing players like Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman, and Mario Lemieux.
Ovechkin's 800th goal came on December 13, 2022, against the Chicago Blackhawks. He completed his milestone by scoring a hat trick. But by this time, his scoring pace had slowed slightly, as he reached it after 200 games. He was just one goal short of breaking Gordie Howe's 801 goals.
Finally, on November 5, he scored his 900th goal, making him the only member of the 900-goal club. Ovechkin reached the milestone several months after breaking Wayne Gretzky's 894th goal record on April 6.
Alex Ovechkin is currently playing his 21st NHL season, and talk about his retirement has come up several times this year. He has earlier mentioned that health will be the main factor in deciding when he retires. And so far, Ovechkin has given no such timeline. He continues to enjoy playing and competing at a high level.
