Revisiting Craig Conroy’s trades as Flames general manager

Folks, the 2025 NHL Draft was Craig Conroy’s third as general manager of the Calgary Flames.

Since taking the helm, Conroy has made 14 trades. With the draft behind us, we have a decent sense of how Conroy’s many trades have shaped up.

With a few picks still pending, here’s a quick revisit of Conroy’s trades as Flames GM.

Conroy’s trades, at a glance

June 27, 2023: Tyler Toffoli traded to New Jersey for Yegor Sharangovich and Calgary’s 2023 third-round pick

• Calgary originally traded their 2023 third-round pick to Seattle as part of the Calle Jarnkrok trade. New Jersey acquired it from Columbus for Damon Severson.
• Calgary’s 2023 third-round pick was used to select Aydar Suniev.

Nov. 30, 2023: Nikita Zadorov traded to Vancouver for conditional 2024 fifth-round pick and 2026 third-round pick

• Vancouver had received a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick from Chicago, the most favourable fifth-rounder they had, for Anthony Beauvillier. That conditional pick was passed onto Calgary. The Flames subsequently traded that conditional pick to San Jose.
• At one point Chicago owned three fifth-rounders – their own, Calgary’s and Nashville’s. Their own pick went to San Jose (via Vancouver and Calgary), while Nashville’s went to Toronto.

Jan. 31, 2024: Elias Lindholm traded to Vancouver for Andrei Kuzmenko, Joni Jurmo, Hunter Brzustewicz, 2024 first-round pick and conditional 2024 fourth-round pick

• The 2024 fourth-round pick had two different conditions on it. If Vancouver advanced to the 2024 Western Conference Final, a 2024 third-round pick would transfer to Calgary instead of the fourth-rounder. If that condition wasn’t triggered, then the Flames would receive the better of the two fourth-rounders the Canucks owned, between their own and New Jersey’s (which they had previously acquired for Curtis Lazar).
• New Jersey’s 2024 fourth-rounder transferred to Calgary. The Flames subsequently traded it to Philadelphia during the 2024 draft.
• Vancouver’s 2024 first-round pick was used to select Matvei Gridin.

Feb. 28, 2024: Chris Tanev (50% cap hit retained) traded to New Jersey for Cole Brady; Brady traded to Dallas for Artem Grushnikov, 2024 second-round pick and conditional 2026 third-round pick

• This was a three-way, double-retention trade. Tanev was traded by New Jersey to Dallas to complete the transaction.
• Dallas’ 2024 second-round pick was used to select Jacob Battaglia.
• Dallas’ 2026 third-round pick would transfer to Calgary only if the Stars advanced to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. They did not, so the pick did not transfer.

Mar. 6, 2024: Noah Hanifin (50% cap hit retained) traded to Philadelphia for Mikhail Vorobyov; Vorobyov traded to Vegas for Daniil Miromanov, conditional 2026 first-round pick and conditional 2024 third-round pick

• This was a three-way, double-retention trade. Hanifin was traded by Philadelphia to Vegas to complete the transaction.
• Vegas’ 2025 first-round pick would transfer to Calgary if it was not traded by Mar. 10, 2024 (the trade deadline) or if it was top 10. Vegas traded it to San Jose in the Tomas Hertl trade, so their 2026 first-round pick went to Calgary instead.
• Vegas’ 2024 third-round pick would upgrade to a 2025 second-round pick if Vegas advanced to the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs. They did not, so it remained a 2024 third-round pick.
• Vegas’ 2024 third-round pick was used to select Kirill Zarubin.

Mar. 7, 2024: Emilio Pettersen traded to Dallas for Riley Damiani

Mar. 8, 2024: Conditional 2024 fifth-round pick traded to San Jose for Nikita Okhotiuk

• As previously noted, the conditional 2024 fifth-round pick moved in this trade was originally acquired in the Nikita Zadorov trade with Vancouver on Nov. 30, 2023.

June 19, 2024: Jacob Markstrom (31.25% cap hit retained) traded to New Jersey for Kevin Bahl and conditional 2025 first-round pick

• New Jersey’s 2025 first-round pick would transfer to Calgary only if it wasn’t in the top 10. It was not, so it transferred to Calgary.
• New Jersey’s 2025 first-round pick was used to select Cole Reschny.

June 27, 2024: Andrew Mangiapane traded to Washington for Colorado’s 2025 second-round pick

• Washington had previously acquired Colorado’s 2025 second-round pick for Lars Eller.
• Colorado’s 2025 second-round pick was used to select Theo Stockselius.

June 29, 2024: New Jersey’s 2024 fourth-round pick traded to Philadelphia for Los Angeles’ 2024 fifth-round pick and St. Louis’ 2024 sixth-round pick

• As previously noted, the Flames acquired New Jersey’s 2024 fourth-round pick in the Elias Lindholm trade with Vancouver on Jan. 31, 2024. The Flyers had acquired the two picks sent to Calgary in previous trades.
• Los Angeles’ 2024 fifth-round pick was used to select Luke Misa.
• St. Louis’ 2024 sixth-round pick was used to select Eric Jamieson.

Jan. 30, 2025: Jakob Pelletier, Andrei Kuzmenko, 2025 second-round pick and 2028 seventh-round pick to Philadelphia for Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee

June 28, 2025: 2026 seventh-round pick traded to Detroit for 2025 seventh-round pick

• Detroit’s 2025 seventh-round pick was used to select Yan Matveiko.
