In the summer of 2001, Florida Panthers general manager Bill Torrey acquired forward Valeri Bure alongside Jason Wiemer from the Calgary Flames. The move was designed to pair Valeri with his brother, franchise goal-scoring legend Pavel Bure . In exchange, Florida sent forward Rob Niedermayer and a 2001 second-round draft choice to Calgary under general manager Craig Button.

Rob Niedermayer With Florida Panthers

During parts of eight seasons with the Panthers, Rob Niedermayer established himself as a reliable, physical contributor. Originally selected fifth overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, he appeared in 518 games for South Florida, recording 101 goals and 165 assists for 266 points. While he posted a minus-58 rating, that figure reflected Florida’s team struggles rather than his individual effectiveness.

Niedermayer brought an imposing physical edge, accumulating 435 penalty minutes alongside 87 power-play points. His individual highlight in South Florida came during the 2000-01 campaign, when he finished 34th in Selke Trophy voting.

Rob Niedermayer With Calgary Flames

Following the trade, Niedermayer spent parts of two seasons in Calgary, skating in 111 games while contributing 14 goals and 24 assists for 38 points. He logged a minus-28 rating, 91 penalty minutes, and nine power-play points during his time with the Flames. In March 2003, Calgary dealt him to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, bringing his brief tenure in Alberta to a close.

2001 2nd-Round Pick (Andrei Medvedev)

The second piece heading to Calgary in the transaction was the 56th overall pick in the second round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, which the Flames utilized to select goaltender Andrei Medvedev. Medvedev ultimately never played in North America, spending his entire career across various Russian leagues. His international career featured three appearances for Russia at the IIHF World Junior Championship between 2001 and 2003.

Valeri Bure With Florida Panthers

Valeri Bure spent parts of three seasons in South Florida, appearing in 132 games while tallying 33 goals and 56 assists for 89 points. He registered a minus-14 rating, 42 penalty minutes, and 40 power-play points over his Panthers tenure. His top individual accolade with Florida was a 43rd-place finish in Lady Byng Trophy voting during the 2003-04 season. His highlight in South Florida was the rare opportunity to share the ice with his brother, Pavel.

Valeri Bure With Calgary Flames

Before arriving in Florida, Valeri spent parts of four seasons with Calgary, generating impressive offensive numbers. Across 256 contests, he compiled 93 goals and 99 assists for 192 points, along with a minus-28 rating and 100 penalty minutes. Bure served as a focal point on the Flames’ man advantage, recording 78 power-play points. He earned an All-Star Game selection during the 1999-00 campaign and finished 18th in Lady Byng Trophy voting that same year.

Jason Wiemer With Florida Panthers

Jason Wiemer’s stay in South Florida was brief, spanning just 70 games during the 2001-02 season. He notched 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points, a minus-4 rating, nine power-play points, and 178 penalty minutes as a rugged physical presence. Florida later traded Wiemer to the New York Islanders in a one-for-one swap for defenseman Branislav Mezei.

Jason Wiemer With Calgary Flames

Prior to the deal, Wiemer spent parts of five seasons in Calgary, dressing in 252 games. He recorded 34 goals, 32 assists, 66 points, a minus-41 rating, and 13 power-play points. Wiemer provided an intimidating presence for the Flames, racking up 567 penalty minutes while offering a versatile blend of toughness and secondary offense.

This transaction reshaped both franchises in the early 2000s. While Niedermayer was a cornerstone pick for Florida who later won a Stanley Cup alongside his brother Scott in Anaheim, the trade accomplished its primary goal in South Florida. Reuniting Pavel and Valeri Bure produced one of the most memorable sibling duos in franchise history, leaving a lasting legacy that helped build enthusiasm and long-term stability for NHL hockey in South Florida.
