We have been waiting for something definitive about Connor McDavid’s next contract all summer. Ideally, an announcement that it is being signed, however long it ends up being for. Mostly to get the rest of the hockey world to stop talking about it and overanalyzing the situation. But also so us Edmonton Oilers fans can have some peace of mind that the best hockey player in the world will be staying in Edmonton for another few years.
So far, news and updates about the situation have been, rightfully so, kept quiet. There is no need for the details of the negotiation process to be publicized. But it has led to a lot of room for speculation from fans and media personalities alike on what McDavid will end up doing.
Nothing is confirmed, yet. But over the past few days there have been rumblings of a hush-hush press conference set to be held on Monday, October 6. Initially, there was an X user who had suggested that their event that was scheduled for that morning in the Hall of Fame room at Rogers Place was rescheduled for Tuesday. Some believed this was due to some pre-season maintenance happening on-site that was going to interfere with that event.
But, X user @thackattack41 provided some more details on that from their perspective, indicating something more might be happening that morning.
Monday presser update:
— Klima's Lid (@thackattack41) October 4, 2025
1. There is a presser Monday at Rogers.
2. Everyone is being extremely "tight lipped" about the presser to the point that employees have no clue what it's about. (Which is odd)
3. Another event, that had been scheduled for Monday got moved for this presser.
It is not yet fully confirmed there is even a press conference. However, it does seem that something is happening. It was suggested at first that this was for maintenance. But now, we find out that a different event has been rescheduled and employees are being tight lipped about what is happening.
Clearly, if there is something in the works, it is an important announcement that the team requires planning for. Although Jake Walman and Mattias Ekholm are important parts of the team, those extensions are unlikely to require a full press conference.
This means it has the potential to be something big. The biggest thing left is Connor McDavid’s contract extension.
So far, not much is confirmed. But there have been enough suggestions and comments from members of the media to tell us that it will likely be a short-term deal, maximum of four years. And the dollar value is expected to be less than we might anticipate, if Elliotte Friedman is to be believed.

The amount of external factors that McDavid is needing to weigh for this deal have prolonged negotiations. He is trying to balance his own deserved significant raise, his obligation to his peers to reset the market as the cap ceiling rises, and his own desire to take a discount to help the Oilers handle their cap situation.
