The Buffalo Sabres will be without captain Rasmus Dahlin for at least Tuesday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens after head coach Lindy Ruff announced the defenseman will remain behind in Buffalo.

Dahlin left Monday’s 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers in the second period with an upper-body injury and did not return.

Ruff said afterward that Dahlin is considered day-to-day, but the Sabres decided he won’t travel with the team for the start of its three-game road trip.

“Day-to-day,” Ruff said. “They [can] treat him better here. He doesn’t have to get on an airplane right now. Obviously, that probably rules him out for tomorrow.”

The injury occurred early in the second period after Dahlin took a slap shot near the right face-off circle. He went down to a knee, recovered enough to skate to the bench and then headed to the locker room.

Dahlin had already scored earlier in the game, giving Buffalo a power-play goal late in the first period before his exit. He finished with 9:06 time on ice, one goal in four shot attempts and one blocked shot.

The 26-year-old has two goals and four points through six games this season and continues to handle a major workload on Buffalo’s blue line, averaging 23:38 TOI per game.

Dahlin’s absence leaves the Sabres without their captain and top defenseman for the second half of a back-to-back. Owen Power and Mattias Samuelsson will likely get more playing time and increased responsibilities while Dahlin remains out.

Buffalo visits Montreal on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET before facing the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. The Sabres then return to Montreal for another road matchup on Saturday.
