Sabres Announce the 2026-27 Opening Night Roster

This roster is built to win hockey games at every position. Thompson remains one of the league’s elite goal scorers, and Dahlin is a true Norris‑caliber defenseman. Behind them is a supporting cast that fits perfectly with Buffalo’s identity. Quinn is primed for a breakout year. With Alex Tuch departing in the offseason, Quinn steps into a larger role and has legitimate 30‑goal potential.

Buffalo will also need its young forwards to elevate their game, with Ostlund and Helenius joining Benson as key contributors. Ostlund, fresh off signing an eight‑year extension, enters his second season looking to build on his 27 points in 60 games as a rookie. Helenius appeared in nine regular‑season games last year, recording four points, and added two more in four playoff games. Both players are expected to take meaningful steps forward.

The rest of the forward group remains strong. Doan and McLeod are reliable 50‑point players, and if Norris stays healthy, he can be a threat every night. The depth behind them complements the top scorers well. The fourth line of Malenstyn, Carrick, and Kozak is one of the league’s fastest, hardest‑checking units.

Malenstyn, in particular, brings immense defensive value. According to Evolving Hockey, he ranked in the 91st percentile defensively last season. Buffalo doesn’t rely on him for offense, though when he does score, it’s often highlight‑reel material. His job is to kill penalties, wear down opponents physically, and set the tone. Carrick, acquired at last year’s deadline, fills a similar role. He was brought in to win faceoffs, kill penalties, and add more physicality to Buffalo’s bottom six.

Even with injuries to Samuelsson and Zellweger, the Sabres have depth on the blue line. The recent signing of Grzelcyk on a one‑year deal gives them a steady veteran presence who can help bridge the gap until the defense is fully healthy.

Meanwhile, Rathbone entered camp on the outside looking in. He’s spent the last two seasons with the team’s American Hockey League affiliate Rochester Americans, posting 23 points in 63 games in 2024‑25 and 18 points in 49 games last season. He’ll be fighting to prove he belongs on the NHL roster.

Goaltending brings no surprises. The Sabres return the same trio as last season. With Lyon recovering from a shoulder injury, either Luukkonen or Ellis will start on opening night. Luukkonen was on the ice Tuesday morning after tweaking his lower body in the preseason finale, a good sign for Buffalo’s stability in net.

The Sabres open their season on the road on Thursday, Oct. 1, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. With a deep roster, strong leadership, and a clear identity, they’ll look to build on last year’s success and push for an even deeper playoff run.
