Benson was the 13th overall pick in the 2023 draft and became the first player from the class to sign a major extension. The 21-year-old had the best season of his three-year career, recording 43 points in 65 games for the Sabres.
He impressed in the Sabres’ playoff run, recording five goals and nine points in 13 games, while also providing a physical edge to the middle-six.
With Tuch’s departure, expect Benson to fight for a spot on the Sabres’ top line alongside Tage Thompson. His contract could help set the market for other restricted free agents from the 2023 draft class, as Will Smith, Leo Carlsson, Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli are all eligible for extension.
